Is an 2001 Honda TRX250EX a manual or does it have an automatic clutch? I was told that the left lever on the handlebar was the clutch is that true?

 

Its a semi-auto foot shift, just like the utility quads.

 

Later years have a "sport clutch" that can be used just like a manual, or you can skip using it and just shift with your foot only like a traditional old school auto geared ATV transmission. Offhand I don't recall just which year Honda switched to the sport clutch, maybe 2005 or 2006? Pretty sure the 2001 did not come stock with a manual clutch. I don't know of any aftermarket solutions either.

 

So does pressing in the left brake do any harm before shifting then? Its kind of a habit now.

 

Its easier to shift if you let off the throttle a bit. Unless you're downshifting and slowing down, I don't see why you would want to press the brake. I would think that would be pretty easy habit to break.
