Can anyone identify this noise? Bike runs fine but after riding the bike hard it sort of howls when revved? Doesnt happen all the time usually just after a rough trail riding session or a long WOT run.

Sounds like a bearing whine.

 

Do you hear it when the motor is under load (driving it)?

 

I never noticed it while riding mostly it is when it is in neutral and revved. But it only happens sometimes, very strange.

I'd be concerned if it were bearing whine under load...with it happening intermittently and without load...well, it could be anything...without a doubt it's rotating mass as the whine changes with RPM...that can make it tougher to pinpoint as you don't want to run the machine without the cover as there would be little to no lubrication...

its a yamaha warrior, i was told it might be the timing chain, crank bearing, stator whine, one way bearing on flywheel, counter balancer bearing, pickup coil, everyone says something different lol

 

Yeah...lots of moving parts...without pulling it apart and giving everything a good inspection I'd be nothing more than a guessing game...maybe a winter project...

 

If you say it happens mostly while in neutral and revved, I think you could probably rule out wheel bearings, drive chain, etc. since it's not moving. Maybe a clogged oil filter/screen is keeping lubrication getting in the right spots?

You could try to take a paper towel tube or a wrapping paper tube and put your ear on it and move it to different parts of the engine to see where it's the loudest. Might help you narrow it down.

 

So i had my buddy that has the same quad (warrior) bring his over and i rode it and it makes the same exact noise.. maybe the whine is normal? or we just each have a quad with a bad bearing in the same spot lol?
