Default 04 Big Bear electrical/cdi

recently bought a big bear that fried 2 cdi's. was really hoping it was just a wiring problem, but no dice. wiring is good(replaced whole harness), switches seem to be fine. after I tore it down and the cdi is obviously bad(cracked and smells burnt). with everything hooked up and turned on neutral light comes on hit the starter button indicator lights go dim and ignition fuse blows.

is there anything I can do to try and prevent it from frying again? I also replaced the regulator/rectifier and coil.

in a drunken stupor I decided to bust of open the cdi box just to see. resoldered some of the connections, replaced two of the internals, cleaned it up plugged it in and it busted off with one push of the button. maybe I'm lucky or maybe I'm that good. Will post if this fix doesn't last.
