Default 1990 Trail Boss switches on shifter

I was helping a guy fix his recoil on his 1990 Trail Boss and I noticed two little push switches located on the shifter. It looks like they get depressed when it is in either high or low. The guy said he had issues with the AWD and I am wondering of these switches have something to do with it. Or are they for something else? I don't remember seeing anything like this on my 350L but that was a little newer.

Thanks,
Mike

One is the neutral switch for the neutral light on the dash, the other one is for the reverse indicator dash light.
