01 Rappy 660 Build Questions
#1
Hey guys,
So ever since I bought my quad it always had troubles starting when cold. Would take about 5 mins of messing with the choke lever and throttle to get it going. It has a K&N filter with non modded box/lid. Once it was warmed up, it would start almost instantly. Figured it was a carb issue so I ripped them apart and cleaned them. Noticed the jet needle was in position 4 (both sides) and the jets were stock. Cleaned them up, and threw it back together. It would only start and idle if I held it WOT. So I assumed it was the valve clearance. Adjusted that into spec to what my manual said. Still same thing, only start and idle at WOT. So figured I messed something up in the carbs so apart they came again. Ended up breaking the throttle valve (****) so a replacement carb is on the way for parts.
In the mean time, figured I would test compression. Since no carb to warm up and idle, had to do it cold. Came up with 92PSI. Poured a bit of oil in and tried again. Shot up to 195PSI so there is a rebuild in the close future.
I have a full HMF performance exhaust on the way. I'm looking at a 11:1 compression wiseco piston. Unsure the size due to unknown condition of the jug (tearing down tomorrow).
I will be running 91 octane pump (all we got around here) at an elevation of 250m. Mostly trail/woods driving but will be WOT on gravel roads getting to the trails. I don't need a race motor, just something solid that can take a beating when I want it to.
So will the 11:1 be alright? I have read that it is safe to do so, only 12:1 or higher needs an upgraded rod. Also read that 91 octane is ok for 11:1. Jets will be (possibly, unless these numbers need to be changed)
Left: 150 main, 25 pilot, needle in 3rd slot
Right: 155 main, 25 pilot, needle in 3rd slot
I will be needing a new rod as well, thinking of going with the HotRods OEM replacement (reviews? Horror stories? best bang for buck?) since my OEM rod chewed the hell out of my stock wrist pin.
Will I be needing a hotcam as well with this? Haven't gotten the chance to dig into that topic yet, but if someone could shed light on that it would be great.
Is there anything else that I missed? If so please leave a comment, I only want to do this once haha.
Thanks for reading
