Oil confusion on type 2 transmission in 1987 Trail Boss
#1
Hi All,
I have a 1987 Polaris Trail Boss 4x4 with a type 2 transmission. Per the service manual Type 1 and 3 transmissions use Polaris Chaincase lubricant, but the manual states the type 2 transmission uses SAE 30 wt motor oil.
Any reason besides cost on why I wouldn't want to use Amsoil Gear and Chaincase lube in a type 2 transmission?
If 30 wt oil is better, any reason why I can't use a synthetic 10w-30?
Thanks!

I haven't thought of this old gear case oil in a while. It was dark, graphite based oil that smelled going in and worse coming out and even darker. This oil is no longer made as All Polaris machines went to Agl and every machine that used the different oil could use the newer type. Yes some people still think car oil is good and use it on some of the older ones, but Agl or an equivalent chain case oil such as Amsoil is a much better choice.Leave the car oil for the cars. Same for the type f transmission fluid that Polaris used in the hubs in the early days.Demand Drive Plus is a better lubricant than type f.

Hi OPT!
Appreciate your fast response!.
That old gear case oil does sound nasty. I assumed that using the Amsoil Gear and Chaincase would be just as good or better than 30wt oil but just wanted to be sure. I'll go out and put in the Amsoil right now.
Thanks a lot!!!
