Tri-Z 250 vs. Raptor
#1
Does anyone know how the tri-z 250 runs? The reason I am asking is an aquaintance(sp?) is bringing down his Tri-Z to race my raptor in a drag race and I wanted to know if I should be concerned? I have never seen one before so I have no idea how fast they are but he was talking big about his Tri-Z. I didnt ask if it was modded or anything he just asked if I would race and of course I said YES! Someone please let me know before this weekend! Thanks. Only intelligent replies needed not bashing replies!

I raced a Tri-z 250 a few years back when my Warrior had just left the showroom. Had my shiny $4900 baby (totally stock then) spanked by a $600 junker. The guy said he just bought it and it wasnt running very well. Geeze I'd hate to have seen it running good! After seeing how bad my Raptor roosts on my Piped Warrior I'd like to find that old junker again for a bit of a rematch. Basically I dont think you should worry much unless it's seriously built.

If yours is stock and his isn't you might be up for a good run. Three wheelers are quick. They have the traction of a quad coupled with the light weight of a motorcycle. That Tri-Z probably only weighs about 275 pounds. If it has a recent top end and a pipe he'll probably give you a good run. The only equalizer is that he'll have the same problem at the starting line. That problem is keeping the front end down on launch.

Speaking from experience (on the tri-z) they are pretty quick. You have to remember it is a 250 2 stroke that is at least 100 pounds lighter. If it has extensive mods you will have your hands full. However, I do believe you will get him on the top end. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Mr45auto, How do you like or might I ask how does your kid like the DG pipe on the LT-80? My son has one and is wanting a pipe more for sound and not for performance so I was curious how it sounds and how much it costs.
Thanks for the info guys I will give it my best.
(I think I will go out and practice take offs)

My 1 and only ATV at present is a 1985 TRI-Z, so I can tell you pretty well the power of the machine.Bone stock (pipe reeds ETC) it would be prety even with you puling away on the top end (if the Z is geared stock) If the guy is worth his TRI-Z salt and has a good pipe and Carbon fiber reeds he will get the best of you, like was stated previously, they have good HP and are very light, easily in the 280 range and making 40 HP with a good pipe and reeds.Have fun and remember the old Trikes!!

Well the DG is alot ALOT louder than stock. Mid range and top end power is much improved with a bit of a loss down low. You may have to compensate with clutch work.

I find it hard to believe that a stock 400ex could take a stock tri z 250, unless the z was in need of some serious maintenance. I don't want to start a flame war but the z has more horsepower stock and is around 100 lbs lighter. In a drag race it seems like the z would be the easy winner. Around a track would be a whole different story, but we are talking drag race right?

yes i found it hard to believe too. It was a straight drag race down a road. The Z had a fresh rebuild on it a month ago so it was running strong. Maybe the choke was on or something,,but I had a slight pull on him. But your right the numbers dont add up to me beating him.
I guess we will have to have a rematch with me riding the Z and him on my 400ex to see for sure.
