I have a Garmin Etrex GPS, with a handlebar mount.

This is pretty good, it tells you heading, track, current speed, max speed, as well as allowing you to navigate on the fly.

The Handlebar mount is quite robust, the Etrex is water-proof to 1m, and sealed against dust, etc.
