Xplorer 400 no spark
#1
So I scored a 1996 Xplorer 400 for $400. Doesn’t run, threw a battery at it, cranks but won’t start. Determined I don’t have a spark. Ohm’d out the stator and trigger coil. Stator seemed to be in spec I think it was around 225-250ohms.. would have to double check. Trigger coil was open. Replaced the trigger coil with a rmstator part off amazon. Now reading 110-115ohm. Same story, no spark. I Don’t seem to be getting any voltage to the ignition coil. Checked resistance off the black/black red wires to CDI from that stator while cranking and am reading approx 80volts AC. Can’t find a spec on that. I threw a cheap $30 CDI from amazon and found no change. Have tried with black kill switch wire removed. If I check resistance/voltage from white/white red wires from the trigger coil while I turn over by hand I don’t see any fluctuation, was expecting something as it fired. Was thinking I set my gap poorly. Kind of stumped at this point- was hoping for some ideas?

Stator black/red to red 226 ohms. Pick up coil white/red to white 97 ohms. If you have that or close, the stator should be ok. Coil primary should be 0.3 ohms, secondary (with cap on) 6.3k ohms. You've pulled the kill wire from the cdi,but pull the black wire from the reverse limiter also and see if you have spark. Module #32 on the parts break down.Located behind the oil tank. If you still don't have spark, that cheap cdi could be the problem.

Thank you, I’ll check that out tonight after work. Any aftermarket CDIs worth buying or should I get from Polaris? Also was curious about converting to DC ignition- but would like to know if anyone has tried that. I see mixed reviews on RM stator products...

Member just used the RM kit on his 500. Bought a cheap stator and didn't work. Used the RM that taps into the lighting coil as an ignition source. Oem cdi is NLA. Either take a chance on another cdi or try the RM kit that is considerably more. https://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-to-DC-Ig...daq~CB&vxp=mtr

Ran thru some resistance checks again
stator was- 222ohm
The new trigger coil- 115ohms
both circuits on my ignition coil were WAY out. ~20Mega ohms!
Looks like I have my next bad part to order. Thank you again and I’ll keep you posted
