Default 2005 Sportsman 500 HO electrical problems

Hello, my 2005 Sportmans 500 HO was dead, none of the electronics worked, no head lights, gauge console, starter-NOTHING! I tested the battery it had 12 Volts but no amps. I replaced the battery and when I installed the new battery the fan runs with the kill switch in the off position and the ignition is also off. When I put the key in the ignition and turn it to start, the starter turns but doesn’t engage. Also the gauge console and headlights don’t work when the key is in the accs or start position. I replaced all the electrical connections about 4 years ago due to corrosion. Wondering if anyone else has had the same problems and what solutions you came up with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

04 to 08 machines had a PDM, or ecm, or control module, issue that could cause all sorts of problems. The part has several names.
the ""Power distribution module" did three things. It was a voltage regulator, fan control, and circuit breakers for the system. I'll look at a manual Monday and see if I can help you do some tests to determine if it's the cause.

I doubt it's going to be the starter issue, my guess is the bendix is not working.

Okay thank you. I read on a couple other threads that there is a recall for some of the 2005 ECM. I’m going to check tomorrow to see if my vin number is included in the recall. Stupid question, but what is a bendix and what does it do? Thank again for your help, greatly appreciate it.

The bendix is turned by the starter motor and centrifugal force causes another gear to rotate and move towards the flywheel, engaging the teeth and turning the motor over. When the start button or key is released, the gear disengages from the flywheel and moves back toward the starter out of the way.
its inside the recoil housing. The starter does not have to be removed to replace it.

Google Polaris 3087030 and you can find a pic of it.

Looking at the wiring diagram im almost sure your PDM is bad. It controls the fan, and does have 12 volts supply with the key off so it could very well turn the fan on with the key in the off position.

I think your right! I called my local dealer today and they said there is a recall on my ECM so I’m dropping the quad off in the morning. Hopefully that fixes the issues. Thank you again for all your help. Greatly appreciated

Make sure its covered under warranted, which recalls are, but if it's been replaced once already, this one is on you and your pocketbook. They can be spendy too.

If it's not covered, you can pick one up for $150.
If this doesn't solve your problem, which I'm pretty sure it will, I would go the the kill switch. Pins get corroded. That solved my no power issue on my 06.

I didn't know you could get them that cheap, but you can on amazon. Not mine though.

This was where I got mine from. I actually returned the first one I got under warranty. Thought it was defective, but ended up being that kill switch. They were great to deal with, no questions asked, and super fast shipping.
