I was left a 1992 Polaris Trail Boss 350L by my grandfather and am new to ATVs. I was hoping to do a oil change but am unable to locate an oil filter, dip stick or drain plug. Any help would be great. Also the type of oil I have SAE10w30 but am confused as to the difference between counterbalance oil and engine oil.
Hi Waalexander,
The 1992 Polaris Trail Boss 350L is a 2 cycle oil injected engine so it doesn't need oil like a 4 cycle engine does. There is a tank in the front that holds the oil that is injected into the engine. You are correct the counter balance does need oil and 10W-30 is the correct oil to use. In my 1995 Xplorer (400L) there is an actual dipstick underneath the carburetor but I don't think the 350L has the dipstick. As I recall the 350L fill port is under the engine and you might have to take the skid plate off to get to it. See the attached pic and look at the location of the part number 22 which I think is the plug for the counterbalance oil. My understanding is there is also a drain plug so you can drain the old oil out (which would be a good idea) and add through the difficult to reach fill plug. Just fill it until the oil gets to the bottom of the plug hole and you should be fine.
You might also want to run premix (40 to 1) initially until you can confirm the oil pump is working properly then go back to straight gas.
Hopefully one of the real experts here can confirm or correct my guidance above.
Good luck.
