chinese Tao Tao 2009 110cc
#1
Hi, I recently bought a 2009 110 quad, it runs well and I don't have any problems yet, I have had Chinese scooters b4 and had pretty good luck with them. What I want to know is are these Chinese quads as bad as some say they are? I only use it to ride in my sub in the winter on mostly snow, I don't go off roading anymore, to old for that. What are the most common problems to look for? thanks for any info. also I am a pretty fair small engine mechanic.

As with anything, Chinese makes vary in quality, but the biggest problem is back up if anything does go wrong. Most are badged by the importer, with whatever name takes his/her fancy, they sell a container load or two, then disappear, leaving no trace of where the machines actually came from. So no matter how good the bike is, (and they usually go for the lowest cost supplier) when a fault occurs, there is no manual and no spares.
On a practical level, nuts and bolts are not always tight, check them. Sprockets are sometimes not round so you get slack and tight places in the chain, not a lot you can do other than change them for better quality. A surprising number have grease points on steering and suspension, grease them. Plastics are often more brittle than on Japanese makes so be careful with them.

To answer mopedmike's query, don't go too wide on front tyres, as it alters steering geometry and may make steering heavy or wander, Otherwise any 7" rim tyres that will fit under the wheelarches without fouling, are OK. With rears remember, the bigger the OD of tyre, the higher the gearing though.
As to the Sunl, don't know, vins can be anywhere on the frame, across the front behind the bull-bar is a favourite place, but you would be better opening a new post, rather than adding your post to one on another make and subject.
