Goodness Greif, whats wrong w/ me?

I am so excited about getting a new quad. As most of you know, I was debating 2 stroke or 4 stroke scramblers and "said that i had decided on the 4 stroke." Well ever since i posted that, something inside me has said 2-stroke, 2-stroke, 2-stroke. Well i believe i have changed my mind for good. I am going 2-stroke 4x4 (WooHoo) and ill get her in about 3-4 weeks! I have some questions though.
FIRST AND FOREMOST....Is this quad going to handle me and my girlfriend AND be able to cruise through the woods fairly comfortable?
1) What after market mods will increase the engine wear. (pipes, clutches, coolheads, exhaust...etc.)? Or will all mods increase engine rpm causing it to wear faster?
2) What are some things that I need to keep an eye on?
3) Is there anything that i need to do to the quad as soon as i get it whether it be maintenence or something to purchase (No put gas in and ride responses..hehe)
4) I have been reading about gasoline types to use...87, 89, or 93. What should i run when the machine is stock? What types of modifications will cause me to need to use a different type of gasoine?
Thanks Guys. I am looking forward to being a new polaris owner. Ive got quite a few chores around the house to catch up w/ and then ill have time to go after her!

The 400 motor will handle you, girlfriend, and anything else you would rpobably be able to strap on. My wife and I go riding tandem on my 400 Explorer with a cooler full of ice and drinks on the back, and a pack full of gear on the front and the thing just cruises through the woods effortlessly. Trust me (hehehe), you won't have any problems with power.
the first tank of gas you are required to add oil to it (forget the ratio, it'll say in the manual - quite high though). This is to make sure that the injector pump is working without sacrificing your motor in the process. After that, just add gas and occasionally oil and lube the chain. I have just recently learned that the dealer where I purchased my quad from did not jet it properly for my altitude so I have it re-jetted. Other than that the quad has been great, the 4wd is fun to have, and since I'm not a motocross racer the weight of the machine hasnt spoiled my fun with it.
Enjoy!

I have the Xplorer 250 2-stroke and I take my girlfriend with me all the time I notice no difference at all in power with or without her. It actually rides better with her. We took a week off from work and went riding with some friends, we had no trouble going anywhere. The 400 is awesome too, tried one out, but went with the 250 cheaper and met all our needs. I would go with the 400 if allot of long hills were involved in allot of rides. But up here in Northern Maine there are not allot of long hill climbing at leats nothing that seemed to bother my Xplorer. We rode with a 2000 Magnum 325 and with two on my Xplorer it was faster than the 325 with one person on it. Had more power too. Xplorers are really nice quads.

I am sure that pump gas of 87 octane is well within the requirements of any stock quad. Possibly the addition of something to increase compression ratio considerably would require a higher octane. Because of the slower burn however, you may get more power with a medium grade, but if it were me I'd stick with the lowest octane that doesn't ping, and on a stock machine, that'd be regular.

DreamOfPolaris,
That isn't always true. The correct answer is to check your owner's manual.
My 400Ex manual says to run 92 Octane. And its stock.
A good rule of thumb is to start with 87 and if it pings, then use 89, if it pings then use 91, etc.
Just read your ATV 'Bible' and it should provide that info.
