Question 01 Trail boss 325 (LOTSA PICTURES)

first time poster, thanks for having me!
I've recently acquired a basket case 01 trail boss and am in the process of putting it all back together, I have a few small issues with fitment.

1) the tank seems to be resting on top of the carb instead of sitting on the frame ( i am unsure if there is supposed to be some type of stand-offs there or if the carb is not correct its aftermarket, (came with the bike).
2) the wiring is a mess, the previous owner hacked the dog snot out of it!!. lots of wires clipped and disconnected, crimp terms. with nothing on them, and almost every module is disconnected. That being said, there are 4 modules under the headlight plastic, the CDI is ok, but I'm not sure what the other 3 are. There are 2 along the bottom side by each and one up high and mounted to the side of the frame, I think that is the voltage regulator. i have a wiring schematic and am working to trace it all down, hopefully!

3) id like to install a digital "dash cluster" consisting of a speedo, tach and the warning lights, I have found one on amazon that would fit the bill with some extra feature that I don't need. how would I go about connecting the tach, according to the instructions I've found it's looking for a signal (not a sparkplug wire signal). if it's even possible

I will have 1000 more questions soon I'm sure, I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. Thanks for all your help!!
