Kawasaki Bayou 220 Very hard to start
#1
Good afternoon, I've got a 1992 Kawasaki Bayou 220 that sat for a couple of years. I removed the carburetor and completely cleaned. The nipple on the choke cable at the carburetor was broken so I replaced that. The plunger moves freely. I got it all back together and found it will not start cold even using choke. I shot a little starting fluid in it and it starts easily and runs great. I can shut if off and it again starts very easily and continues to run great. Once the engine gets cold it absolutely will not start with or without choke unless I hit it with a spray of starting fluid. The choke seems to have zero effect on helping it start. What am I missing in regard to the carburetor? Thanks in advance for the advice and guidance.

First, check the valve clearances. Bikes get bad to start cold if there is no valve clearance. Yamahas are particularly prone to this, but it applies to all machines. Next, check the choke is working properly. It is an extra fuel type, so the passages for fuel to flow through it must be clear. If it still won't start cold, check inlet manifold for leaks and do a compression test.

thank you very much. I’ll check that today.
