Default Help with my math. Gearing/tire sizes on tao 110…

2016 tao tao ATA135D 110cc

So I loathe the 18x9.5-8’s on the back of the little guys quad, when the fronts are 19’s…. To make this pleasing to the eye, I’m sticking 19’s back there, either 19x9.5-8’s or same as front 19x7-8’s.

I want to maintain, if not get slightly better low torque…. I’ve run the numbers on a sprocket change vs the stock 13t front x 45t rear.

They are below.

Those numbers in mind, I’m eyeing simply swapping the front to a 12t. A 19” tire is 5.56% taller than an 18”.

If I’m mathing this correctly, going to a 12t front with 19” tires, will end up getting me 2.14% more torque with the same percentage less speed?

This chart shows a +7.7% gain in torque, -7.7 in speed over stock gearing. Take the 5.56% off that for the larger tires… and… 2.14? Right?

Am I on the right track here?

Anyone with experience on these?

Yes, simply go down to a 12 tooth front with the 19" tyres, though not sure it will be noticeable, 1/2" gain in bikes height and a 2% difference in ratio, isn't much.

DAMNIT merryman….

just when I think I’ve settled on something you make me question it…

im not so much going for clearance in the rear as I am just leveling the thing.

HOWEVER, there’s one tread style I REALLY want… the sun-f a051…. Available (nearest stock ish size without going too stupid) in 20x10-8’s or 19x7-(which is actually the front stock size as well)

Now we delve into something that could easily tip off a firestorm… is wider better. In my experience and research, wider is best for sand…. SAND. Thinner is best for mud/snow, as it cuts rather than floats like the latter.

Id much rather have thinner tires with a beefy well spaced tread on a mud/snow rig than a W I D E tire.

If I jumped to a 20 I can gear to a 12-48, which gets me a 13.5% increase in torque, minus the 10.5% height difference between the two with a 3.5% gain in torque after the 20’s. 1” taller in the back…

But now I’m even wider in the back end…

UGH….

I’m working on spacers… I tried some pre-made 2”, but they didn’t seat correctly and I’ll have to return them. Now eyeing some 2.5’s I found, and have talked to a local shop that said they’d mill the spacer’s inner diameter for the hubs for 30-50$, which is VERY reasonable.

I wish I could find some 20x8’s or even 20x9’s.

Done deal,

ordered the 20’s with a 12t front and 50t rear…..

12/50= 16.9%increase in torque over stock gears

18 vs 20 is 10.5% giving 6.4% increase total increase after tires….. hopefully.

I’ll report back.

If you could get it, an 11 tooth front with the standard 45 rear gives a very similar ratio and you only need to buy that 11 tooth front, rather than both sprockets and a new chain, for the 12/50 you propose.

I thought of that, but since I’m already having to grind the front sprocket retainer and get allen bolts to keep the retainer from hitting the chain on a 12t, I figured 11t would be a REAL pain and just begging for more hassle.
