I’m trying to identify and source a replacement front wheel sensor for my 2006 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4.
The speedometer was permanently reading 0, I think I found the culprit, as the sensor in the attached photos cable had snapped, so I removed the sensor from the inside of the right front wheel hub/knuckle area.
The sensor I removed is:
cylindrical body only
approx 35mm long
approx 11mm diameter
held in with a side grub screw
3 wires: red, green, orange
small connector plug
I've looked online for a replacement part and can't find it listed on quads parts list, having researched it and a lot of searches point to Polaris part numbers 4010298 / 4040081, but I can’t tell if those are actually the same older-style sensor I removed, they seem to be of a different design/type, with a flanged part with a hole presumably for mounting, but there's nothing to mount it to.
Is this sensor just for the speedo? I've seen other threads that mention it might have something to do with the AWD system (i've not checked to see if AWD is working or not).
Does anyone know:
The correct OEM part number for this exact sensor?
Whether Polaris superseded it with a newer design?
Most importantly where I can get a genuine like-for-like replacement?
I’ve attached photos of the original sensor removed from the quad.
Speed sensor. They do not show it on any of the current available parts break down diagrams.
It looks like there may be a sensor that looks like it with the main wiring harness group but it is not identified and not issued a part number.
Since the harness is NLA anything that would had come with it will not be available either. But as I said there is no part number listed anywhere for it to verify that is the part.
I don't know Polaris at all, my boss refuses to fix them since he was obliged to repair Dingbats in the 1990s but Honda 450/500 models from 2003 to 2014 had a speed sensor in the front diff as well as the speedo sensor in the gearbox case, if the two sensors didn't agree, the computer would disconnect 4WD once the speed got above 7mph. Why Honda did this, I don't know, but it caused a regular fault and always because one of the speed sensors had gone wrong.
Normally the speed sensor for a Polaris will be in the speedometer itself. It reads the speed of the rear wheels to protect either the front hubs or the duff from engaging if the rear wheels are spinning to fast so as to not damage the front AWD. That part that you needs appears to just be fir the speedometer itself. I don’t think it needs to be there for theAWD to work .
The problem is with an after market speedo may not have the correct parts it functions to allow everything to work as it should. It is always best to at least try to find either a new unit or used unit that is correct for your year and model. Speedo problems are a major PIA.
