Why are you doing this? If you are try to make it louder or less restricitive. Take out the spark arrester. On the 400ex and 250ex there are 3 screws on the end. Undo them and it should slide out.
I think it would be a good idea if you invested in a manual. This will help you greatly. It shows you how to completely rebuild your quad.

First off, why do you want to take it off? To replace it? (supertrapp?) or just to take it off and leave it off?
I know i'd sure hate to have to listen to a little Recon uncorked when I was trying to ride...

There are 2 bolts holding it up under the rear rack, and there is a clamp holding it to the head pipe.
When I replaced mine I did not see any way to remove the spark arrestor, the whole muffler is welded together.
Other then replacing the stock muffler with an aftermarket one or some other type of service, there is no good reason that I can think of to remove the muffler. It will just make your Recon annonyingly loud and give you a great chance of blowing the engine for running it way too lean. The little bit of performance gain would not be worth the headaches.

Why would you do something like that?....All that will do is take away the back pressure which will take away your torque and maybe give you a little top end gain............NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!!!!!
