I'm thinking about getting either a Raptor, 400EX, or a CR500 for the summer. And was wondering if anyone has rode a CR500 against a 4-Wheeler, or has just ridden one. Can you tell me some info about it? low-mid-top power? and top speeds?

A CR500 is a totally different riding experience than a quad. Can't even compare. CR500 has the power to rip your arms off. A quad would not have a chance next to it no matter how many mods are done to it. I believe the CR500 top speed stock is 128mph,,while the highest quad speed stock was like 80mph (quadzilla). I would recommend you riding the CR500 first before purchasing. Bike is crazy fast but most like a 250 better because they are easier to throw around.

My dad had a new CR500R back in 1994.I was about 8 years old.I thought I was real hot stuff then.He started the bike and and I took off.I went down my road at idle not going fast at all. Then while going down a hill I barely touched the throttle. It almost came over backward on me!I put the bike against a pole and made him come get it.He thought it was funny.I thought he was crazy! He could go down to st joe and shift into 4th gear and put the front tire about a foot of the ground and just ride and ride and ride.It was real fun trying to keep up on my yz80!

I had a 88' CR500R and it had a hard time breaking 100MPH with stock gearing, but had more power than ever needed, I ride much faster with the lighter CR250R

I have never ridden a CR500, but have ridden a YZ490, and let me tell you they are fast! I like riding it but ride much faster on a smaller bike like a 125, somtimes its fun to have the power to be able to play with but other times it can be a pain to handle all that extra weight and hight. Just get what is comfortable for you. I personally would get a CR125 or 250, the 500 is just too big for me, but you should ride one if you can before you get one.

JRM where do you ride? Browns camp, Sand lake, chinahat maybe?

I saw a CR500 race quads a few weeks ago. It wansn't much of a race. The CR500 killed everything, even modded Banshee's. Raptors were no challenge to the cr500.

When I raced MX not too many people had 500s for the simple reason the 250s are far superior in MX. If you lived out in the desert and needed +60HP of 2 stroke insanity it would be one thing, but in WV and anywhere else in the east you would be just as fast and possibly faster on a 250. Also, the 250 is the flagship bike of every MX line so you are getting a lot more technology for your money.

I dont know what kind of rider you are and what experience you have, but from my experiences quads are alot more fun in the woods. Dirtbikes are great for mx and fast trailriding, but the instant you slow down they are no fun especially if you are short like I am.

As far as a CR500 drag racing most any quad...I dont have to see it to know what it would look like.

Hey Bub,
At one time, I owned both a CR500 and a 400EX. My CR500 was an '86 model(for those of you that don't know, '86's and '87's offered the most hp because of the factory port placement, but it was also the hardest to start,so honda opted for less hp and better starts in '88) and it was an absolute BEAST! I've seen people on quads race bikes in the sand, and sometimes the quads can win because the bikes just sink and spin, but in perfect traction conditions, even a good 125 will beat almost any quad. But as for the CR500, when I first got it I raced my buddy who was riding my 400ex on the black top. When we took off, I eased into it because I hadn't gotten used to it yet, now I know the 400ex is no rocketship or anything but it is by no means slow, and when I released the power of the 500 I was just dumbstruck. I mean, I passed him like he was trying to pedal the quad to get it going. Needless to say, I was stoked about my newest purcahse. That was before I hit the dirt with it. The CR500 is a big heavy bike with tons of power and if you're not really good or planning on never going past 1/4 throttle, it will kick your a**. I know mine was an '86, but the new ones are still a late '80's design and their not much better. You can have a lot more fun on a quad, espesially in the woods, because you can get crazy, push it and really ride hard, and still come home in one piece at the end of the day. Let me tell you, it's no fun comeing home after getting the **** beat out of you by a big bore two stroke. And I'm not just talking about the crashes you will have when it comes out of nowhere and bites you in the a**, I'm talking about just keeping it on two wheels! It is big and heavy and even without the power, just it's size is very difficult to deal with. You need to be either really good, really big, or plan on going really slow and you just want the stigma of a big bore two stroke. I never clocked it for speed in any way, but I would probably guess somewher in the '90's, and getting there in a hurry. Did I mention how hard they are to start? I'm 6'2" and I can get plenty of leverage on it and it was still a bit**. It even tore a hole right through the bottom of a well made work boot. And even though I never got it checked out,(I just limped around for a week or so) to this day I believe I broke my foot kick starting it. If you want speed, boy does it have it, but if you plan on enjoying yourself don't get a big bore two stroke!

Riceburnin what are you smokin, the top sreed of a CR500 is only like 85-90 mph there not 125mph and a modded out raptor, banshee,or 400ex could beat it in a race
