oil tank on a 400ex
#1
I just ran a search and could not find what i was looking for. I just tried to change the oil in my 400ex and the bolt actually broke the weld off inside. Is there anything i can do (like have it reweldeded, or would that break again?) or do I have to buy a new oil tank? Thanks

I have heard of them breaking due to a weak tack weld. I think you're screwed, or you could try and take it to a person who is real good at welding, but the metal is really thin. You can buy aftermarket oil tanks like the one made by pingry that hold more oil and don't break.

The same thing happened to me last week I have a 01 400EX.I torqued it to Honda specs on my last oil change and everthing and SNAP the hole plug!! I called the shop they said it was not covered and a new tank would cost $168.00 bucks. I said give me the main Honda # called them and know problem sir take it right up and they will take care of it. So I would call if I was you even know your quad is a little older.

I took it to someone to weld yesterday, and they did a pretty good job. I put thinner in the oil tank and it did not leak through. So i drained that and ran a little bit of oil through it, then i filled it up and rode for about 30 minutes and it still looked fine. But now i know im going to be paranoid about this for the life of my quad. Whats that number? Thanks Oh yea I also used a torque wrench, and wen i reached up into my plug i felt a little of the weld still up there, man was that weld thin.
