I like 400L's, especially because of the 2 stroke engine. Just a few questions on this machine...
What engine does it have, explorer or scrambler?
How fast is it?(about 60?)
Can you mud with stock tires?
Are there any mods?
AND, could you please email me if you have one for sale within 100 miles of me(Champaign, IL)

Hey Muddog1,

I'm no expert, but this is what I know (I have a '98 Sport).

1. The engine is the 400 2 stroke which can be found in the Explorer 400, and the Scrambler 400. The Explorer has a slightly different setup, but the motor is the same. Basically, the Sport turned into the Scrambler after 1999.

2. Mine has been clocked at about 65mph (before any mods). I would say that it is between 60-65mph to avoid any arguments.

3. The stock tires on mine suck for mud. I have heard that the newer Scrambler tires aren't too bad though.

4. Yes! There are quite a few mods that you can do to them. Check out http://www.hpd-inc.com and http://www.rittercycle.com for some ideas. In my mind the Sport is pretty competitive in stock form (besides it's weight), but for about $300 you can really make it fly. My only complain about the performance of mine is the weight, and the top-speed. Acceleration is very impressive.

Well, I hope everything I said is accurate. Like I said, I'm not an expert. Good luck.

-Josh

Default polaris sport 400L

All 400L engines are the same. Utility versions like the Xplorer and 96 & 97 have a 200 watt altenator and a US Forestry Department approve exhaust system, all the Sport versions have 150 watt alternators and noisy exhaust systems.
