Hi, I am probably going to be purchasing a 2001 Honda Rancher 4X4, but I dont know if I should get the ES or not. I have heard people say things about how the ES is not reliable in cold, wet conditions and I want to know if thats true because I will be in the mud and everything else that could make something electronic like that mess up. Also I dont know if I will like shifting gears by just pushing a button. What is everyones opinions on the ES. Are there any performance modifications that can be made to the Rancher becuase a top speed of 51 mph just wont cut it for me. I need all the opinions and advice I can get about the Rancher because 5400$ is a lot of money to spend. Also what did everyone pay for their Ranchers? Thanks in advance.

I can get a Rancher S model here in NC for $4799 + tax. An ES is $200 more. I was considering a RAncher myself for a second atv but I have decided to wait and see what 2002 brings out. Should be very interesting with Yamaha.

If 51 ain't fast enough for you then a rancher isn't what you want. Get a sport quad if you want a sport quad. Get a rancher if you want a rancher.

P.S. The es system is flawless in my esperiance. From water to mud....from 105 to -10....no problems what so ever!!!!

Ditto what Cartman308 said. If 51 MPH isn't fast enough for ya, you're barking up the wrong tree. Love my Rancher, but it isn't fast, and I don't expect it to be.

No doubt!! where I ride there arent enough straight-aways to get up to 51 mph anyways.

i've got the 2000 es and was really not sure if i made the right choice because of the electronics. well i picked up my quad used with 120 miles on it for $4500. i take my machine thru water thats waist high all the time and sometimes it stalls if the water is really cold. but other than that its been great. i love the electronic shift especially when riding in the water, no wet feet!!! later - dana

get the es... flawless system, although there are some lemons out there, thats something you cant deny.. if you get one all you have to do is replace the sensor and your a-ok.

my rancher keeps up with a 300ex so im happy.

Dana67, plug the carb drain tube with a screw or small stick. This will stop you from dieing in water.
