Best Tires for Hardpack??
#3
I had the same question... everyone seems to be into mud riding, and I have no intention of riding in the mud, just trails and backroads on hardpack... I went with the ITP Spider Trac tires, due to their pattern and the compound they use to make this 4 ply tire a nice long wearing tire..best of luck to ya.

For the type of riding you do, Blackwater XT's might be a good choice. They aren't overly aggressive like most of the mud tread tires, but still have plenty of bite. The 6 ply rating would be beneficial on the rocky terrain.

I ride the same stuff you do and I run ITP Blackwaters (26X8X12 front and 26X12X12 rear) on ITP aluminum (magnum) wheels. I know the Blackwaters have a reputation as a mud tire, but these have done really well in all conditions-and boy do they LOOK GOOD! I got them from Chaparral, and the price was hundreds less than anyone else quated.

Hi YZGUY,
I go riding at Jawbone,Dove Springs and Hungry Valley.
Just came back from a 55 mile ride at Jawbone. Loved it.
The reason I want better tires than stock is we go out 50-100 miles in
the desert/wilderness and want the best possible reliability.
A lot of people have mentioned Bearclaws, 589, Spidertracks and
Blackwaters. So far I think I am tending towards Bearclaws 6PLY.
I have to stay with original sizes because my tailgate won't close on my
truck if I go bigger.
Where do you drive???

I havn't been to Jawbone, I'll have to give it a try. We rode Hungry Valley last weekend. We like Rasor, Ocotillo Wells, Stoddard Wells, Dumont, and Glamis. During the hot summer, Pismo, San Bernardino Mtns., and the Sierra around Bishop and Mammoth.
