according to their website here is whats new with the 2002
Yes, it's official. Go to Yamaha's website.
Here are the changes.
1. A new YZ spec rear shock for better handling.
2. A redesigned axle ( guess the old one did bite the big one)
3. And yes, all new gear ratios for better performance.
there is gonna be alot of 2001 owners pissed. they damn well better stand by us with the tranny problems on the 2001's at least they are adressing the issues though. fix the tranny problem and the axle and you have the absolute best quad available. that will make the honda boys eat crow stew. hhahahahahaah

If you are going to buy a Raptor, now might be an ideal time. A lot of dealers have 2001 models on the showroom floor (ours as six !!) that they need to get rid of - especially since Yam made the changes. I'd do some serious bartering with the dealer (print out the yamaha web-site list of changes) on the 2001 models. I'll bet you can save a bunch !! Public opinion will be the 2001s are "sub-standard" compared to the 2002s but hey, money talks !!

Raptors are great in the snow i bought mine in Feb and road it every chance i got in the snow. I took it when we went snowmobiling with my buddies. I drag raced my friends formula 500sl in the snow and i beet him from the start to the finish. Ofcors the snow was frozen. He told me he was pind at 72mph and i was pulling away. I have clocked mine with the tuck at 75mph. I also have had no probs with my raptor at all and i ride hard and ride tracks a lot and race my freinds. I personaly like banshees better thats why im going to get a new one buy trakeing my raptor in on it.

Some guys were complaining about blowing carbs off the manifold and they fixed that on `02 by putting on new manifols with better grip on the carbs but if the carb adjustment is too lean, what gives when it has lean intake backfire. Richen up (adjust) idle mixture screws and set the idle speed to spec and even the `01 is OK. (make sure to use choke on cold engine start up)
The space between 1st and 2nd gear is same for `02 (you still need to shift passed neutral) If they close that gap, than you'll have hard time finding neutral. You may want to try lowering your shift pedal a little.
For `02, the gear ratio got lowered on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse (I think the `01 owners complained about tall gearing in those gears.
Tranny lock up - I have no idea what that is.
Rear axle is stronger on the `02 but trees and rocks will still move out on the trails and triples will still bite.
There's other changes but I'm not sure.
When are we going to see the `02 at dealers? I'd like to do my own checking to see what exactly changed.
