I have some play in my steering and cannot figure out how to remove that play. If you were to move the handlebars as if you are steering the machine I have about 1 to 2 inches of play before the wheels start to turn. Is this normal, and is there a fix for this?

Tighten the steering stem nut on the bottom of the steering stem. I would suggest you lock-tight it also! Your not the first nor the last one to have this problem, easy fix!
