Should big four-strokes have a knocking kinda sound at idle??
#1
I don't think this is right but my DS has a knocking sound at idle. I don't notice it while revving. What is the deal? Also the oil is to be between the two lines at the bottom of the dipstick right? I checked mine and it is well above the second line (that is how it came from the dealer). It is leaking oil from around the cap of the resevoir, which I'm guessing would have to do with the previously mentioned problem. Anybody's help with these problems would be greatly appreciated and would help me a great deal.

I would immeadiatly drop the oil and remove the oil filter to check for any brass colored deposits, normally you will find them in the oil filter and housing. If there is a good amount of of thesae deposits it could be your big end on the way out. I was at the local Bombardier service agent a few weeks ago and I was a witness to exactly what you discribed a knock at idle to about 2000 rpm, after engine dissasembly it was proved to the big end.
Wish you luck

At low idle what you may hear is the automatic compression release. It is spring loaded and is located on the end of the exaust cam and it disengages when the cam spins faster. Sometimes when I turn mine on or off you can hear this knocking sound briefly.
Turn your idle all of the way down down slowly and see if it is making the same sound when it dies. If it does, your idle may have been set be set too low. Turn it up till it stops.
I hope this is what you are hearing
Either way I would talk to your dealer about it.

What he is referring to is the Big End Rod Bearing. If for some reason the engine was starved for oil at some point, i.e. Roll over, or low oil. Or if the oil was very dirty this will cause the plain bearing on the rod to fail, this is where the brass deposits in the oil filter and housing come from. Also the comment on idle is good, use a tach and be sure it is at 1300RPM.

When I refer to the big end it is simply short for the big end bearing on the con rod ie the end that attaches to the crankshaft. In the majority of bike engines the big end bearing is manufactured from a brass composite material, hence when it starts to fail it will leave a trail of brass filings in the oil and oil filter.

AS I said in my first post I saw a DS650 motor with a severly damaged big end bearing, at the local service shop, luckily it was not my motor. I Believe that Bombardier repaired that motor under warranty because it had only done ten or so hours.

About the oil leaking out of the cap, I had the same problem. When you tighten the cap the flat rubber washer tends to pinch out and not seal. I purchase a rubber O ring from the local parts store and replace the flat rubber washer with it. The O ring sits in the bevel where the cap screws in and makes a better seal.
