Why is everyone soo infatuated with drag racing?

With two different riders on two different bikes, in an uncontrolled envirnment, and on unstable starting conditions, how could you possibly get a clear cut winner? I have seen 400ex's beat Raptor's, seen Tecate's beat Banshee's, seen 300ex's beat 400ex's, seen Blaster's beat Warrior's.....and so on and so on! It means absolutly nothing!
With soo many variable's, like starting line conditions, tires, reaction times, tire spin, front end comming up ect...it would never happen. The only way you could get good readings, is to get some kind of computer to run each bike from start to finish. And you would also have to put the bikes on some kind of rail to keep them in line and all wheels on the ground. Like a roller coaster rail!
What ever happend to having fun and riding on trails? If all you have to ride on is flat land, you lead a boring life and can't be having real fun like the rest of us.
Finally, if you think you and your buddy are going to go to the local gravel or dirt road to find out who is faster in a drag race, you are sadly mistaken! Unless you are racing a Raptor against a Badger!

I agree with you guys,I mean who really cares how fast your quad can go in a couple of hundred feet.So what if can can beat me.My first ATV was a brand new 1982 ATC 110 and since then I'v had 8 quads ,all of diferent styles, I never cared if someone could beat me in a drag race. The question is how good can you ride it through a tight trail in the woods without hitting a tree or crashing down a hill?Any rider can go 200 feet in a straight line.

You know this really errks me when people expect other people to do the same thing that they do. Have you ever heard of the word individuality? I on the other hand could say why would anybody want to take their quads in the woods and slam their machine into a tree after hitting a big rock bending a rim while looking down watching a tick crawl up their leg. I know that all sounds fun and for you and it probably is, but I am having just as much fun dragging. Why would you care what other people do anyway?
Momar...I hear this, anybody can go in a straight line crap all the time. If it is so easy maybe you ought to come on down to Big River sand drags and teach me and 50 others how to win a drag race. Yes anybody can go in a straight line, but how consistant are your E.T.'s and reaction times? Running consistant E.T's is alot harder than you think. But from a old pro like yourself it would be no problem.

I agree momar anyone can go 60yards in a straight line.I went to one one time and i heard some people talking crap about they were a better rider than the other because they could get to the end faster.Thats a bunch of crap. The way to tell your better than the other is to do techinal trail riding such as going up big hills, riding through ruts, and of course my specialty, whellies.

Apparently there is some kind of addrenaline rush for those that drag race. It must be fun for them, I wouldn't mind having a quad worthy of drag racing sometimes. The dirt, sand, dust, rocks, thats all just obstacles for your quad to overcome to win the race. Who can get there bike to hook up quicker, who can reach top speed quicker, just neat stuff like that. It is what is fun for those people, maybe not you, but it is for them. Its like asking why does the NHRA have all their drag races? They have many variables there too, track conditions, tires, driver reaction time, driver experience, but they do it and its still fun, they just do it a little faster than people on quads can.
Its a harsh criticism to make, that if all they are doing is riding on flat land they are leading a boring life. They might think that doing all that slow trail riding is a waste of gas also.
All I really have to say is to each their on, just as long as everyone is having fun.

Greetings,
Answer: Because its America and that's what we do.
Honda brings over a three-wheel machine used to creep through rice paddys, Americans look at it as a platform for some real fun, and in no time, someone is sticking a bigger engine on it and seeing how fast it will run. This month's Dirt Wheels shows a drag racing riding mower doing a wheelie on its way to 68 mph. The Amish line up for buggy races after social events on Saturday night. Kids will race scooters, people race hot-air balloons, soldiers in the field will hold bug races, and I've even seen people race a few baby chickens down a bar (lured by the popcorn at the other end). And if you can race it, you can bet on it. And have a few drinks while watching. Whether the owner's box at the Kentucky Derby or a flat spot out behind the double-wide, its pretty much the same.

I must have worded this wrong. I have nothing against drag racing, I used to drag race cars for many years. What I meant was, the back yard races mean nothing. In REAL drag racing, you have controlled cercumstances, you have lights, beams, sensors and such to tell if someone left early or late and such.
I just get tired of hearing the local back yard rider say, "I raced this or that, and smoked it", it is getting old. If you want to talk about rider skill, and reaction times and all that, lets do some bracket racing? That takes skill !
For those who don't know what bracket racing is, I will explain it. You tell the track exactly how long it will take you and your bike to get from a dead stop to the 150 ft mark, and you have to do it within 1/100th of a second. If you say you will get to the finish line in 4.59 seconds you have to do it in 4.59 seconds or slower, if you go 4.58, you lose!
Now if you have a 400ex and you are racing a Raptor, they ask each of you how long it will take you to get to the finish line. You say 4.00 seconds, and the Raptor rider says for him it will be 3.00 Seconds. You get a 1 second head start, you leave the start 1 second before the Raptor(this will make it even at the finish), you should both hit the finish line at the same time if both riders do everything pefect. If the 400ex runs 3.98, and the Raptor runs 3.12, the Raptor wins! Because the 400ex went faster than he said he would. IF neither bike goes under thier time they said it would take, Like if the 400ex runs 4.03, and the Raptor runs 3.15, the first person there wins.
