Temp Gauge
#2
I would cut the hose and slip a pipe into it. Drill and tap a hole in the pipe for the sensor/sending unit and reinstall the pipe with two new hose clamps. Install the sensor and you are set. Another option would be to drill and tap the housing over the thermostat on the left side of the engine block. I don't know how big your sensor is so it maybe impractical to due that due to strenght concerns with the housing or how far the sensor will need to sit into the water jacket.

CHeck out my signature....
i didnt install the temp guage (the dealer did) but it has saved my *** MANY times. my fan motor went out on me while i was maxin out the 500 and i looked down to check on the temp and it was on like 240 (boilin over) and REALLY saved my *** at Marengo!
I bought it from Highlifter.com
I HIGHLY recommend this product to ANY LQ engine.

I just installed a HL temp gauge last week on my 500. It was time consuming, but easy. Just take off the front rack and fenders, and every thing is easy to get to. I mounted my sending unit on the top radiator hose, which helps keep it out of the water some what, and is hidden under the fenders. All you have to do is cut the hose and catch all the fluid that comes out, so you can put it back in after your done. If you have a service manual, it will help trying to wire it up.
The gauge has a back light that I wired to come on when I turn on the lights.
If you need some help, email me.

Thanks for the help. My brother-in-law works for Auto Meter so I got the gauge for free. I just couldn't pass this deal up. My guage is a 2" diameter. How big are the ones from HighLifter?
I can see from Grizzly rules pictures that I still need to have him get me the metal piece that sensing unit screws into. I also need somehow to mount it to the handle bars. I wonder if High Lifter would sale their individually?
Arctic500, I don't have a repair manual so not sure on the wiring part. I could use some suggestions. I just had the front fenders and rack off while I was installing the head lights mounted on the handle bars. The plastic is a pain in the butt to get off/on!!!

?????????hows that Cummins? mines located where the oil filter is. i odnt know if this is what the direction asked for or if it is what the dealer did.....but i havent had any problems out of it cause i usually let it get up to 210 degrees and flip the fan switch on...then when it hits 180..i turn it off.

I have a service manual for the '99 models. I'm not sure if the wiring diagram would be the same for the '01 models. Maybe you could find someone on here that has what you need. As far as where to mount the sending unit. You can mount it on the top hose: this will give you water temp coming out of the engine(hot temp) Or you can mount it
on the bottom hose coming out of the radiator (slightly cooler temp)
I'm not sure what HL recommends, but it really is what you choose, and the location of each hose. I chose the top hose under the fender to keep it protected and out of the way. I would be curious to see how much the radiator cools the water after leaving the engine, but mounting 2 sending units is something I might do later on. It can be done!

Let me have another crack at this, I was at work and had to leave that why it was so short. What I was trying to say is if you put the sending unit in the hose that is bringing the cold water (the water that normally comes from the bottom hose connection on the radiator), you would get a innaccurate reading do to the hot water (where you want to read temp.) exits from the engine thru to the top of the radiator, out the bottom of the radiator and back to the engine. On some newer cars they've actually reverse this but I'm sure this isn't the case here. Hope this is a little more clear.
