there is a tiny bit of play in the steering, you can move it left and right about an inch without the tires moving...
the guy says its normal, so you dont have stiff steering,
is that ok?
and.....
how much do break pads/shoes cost,
cause i need some before the breaks wear out,
i just want to say,
this thing is fast,
im very impressed, it can lift the front off the ground on pavement without any help

What year of Scrambler do you have? If you have a 2000 or earlier, your plastic steering stem bushing is worn out (some early release 2001's also have this problem). If this is the case, you need to go to HPD's website and order an aftermarket one for $35. Takes about 1-2 hours to fix and is not hard to do. Here is there website: HPD.


As for brake pads. Depending on which ones you get, they run about $50 for both sets of the fronts and about $25 for the rear pads. Make sure you get sintered metal pads or the Polaris severe duty pads.

i am having same problem with my brakes and my 400 scrambler is only about 2 months old and already the back brakes are shot its in the shop right now getting new ones

Dan,

Check Ebay for some brake pad's. I have seen some on there for like $8.99, not sure what the final price was though. I also didn't read whether they were the good ones or not either. When I go on I usually just type "polaris 400" and it narrows it down pretty good.

if i dont replace my steering bushing, whats the worst thing that can happen?
because,
i dont have all this money to spend
its a 1995, and despite what has been said, its a solid quad.
here is what im buying......
Moose swingarm skidplate - $89
Brakes - $50+
Lightbulb - $2
steering bushing - (maybe) $36
my total amount of money ..... - 40
untill paycheck,
which i then owe my dad $160 for the next 3 weeks to pay him back for his chip-in for the quad

You may also have slop in the steering if your tie rod ends are shot. Wiggle your handlbars while watching the tie rod end where it connects by the front shock. If the tie rods are moving alot and the wheels aren't you need to replace them also. If your tie rod ends are bad and you don't have the bucks to replace the steering bushing and the tie rod ends both right now I would do the tie rod ends first. You can ride with slop in the steering if you have to for awhile but don't let it get too bad and strip a tie rod bolt. If you lose a nut from that tie rod end and it pops out you have no steering on that side. Not good at high speed. You really want to replace both the steering bushing and tie rods if you still have the old type and it will clean up all that slop for you.

i wouldnt put it as alot of slop.....

i can nudge the bars an inch AT MOST in either direction,
i went flying down a paved road, it it felt the slightest bit wiggily,
but keep in mind, there are 25 inch realtors on the back.
the same speed on a dirt road had no effect

i looked at the rod ends, and they wiggle a very small amount,
when i was riding, i tested teh play in the handlebars,
when i turned it that inch of play left or right, the scrambler would slowly go that direction, as expected for such a small push on the bars,

kukerdan

From what you described, you are probably all right to ride on the original tie rod ends and steering stem bushing. Just keep an eye on them and replace when you don't think they are safe anymore. Remember, your neck is on the line, not ours. You need to make the judgement as to when things need replacement. Brakes are a must though. If you run them down to nothing, you will ruin the rotor. Trust me, I have ruined a few.

im going to try to get brakes tomarrow....
now, my scrambler has a gas cap with a guage built into it,
did that come with the scrambler?
because after a very average amount of riding, it said half full, then another 30 minutes of stop and go, it said a quarter,
is this thing right?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!
because when it said half, i looked in, it it didnt seem to empty to me....
or...
is this baby a gass guzzleing hound?
the guy said to put in 93 octane or higher (i use 93) becuase it has a weisco high compression piston.
if this is going to suck up tons of gas, i am gonna run the cheap stuff.....
tell me its the fuel gauge... because the tank seems deep,
oh yeah, how do i fill the reserve tank (is there one?) because it has reserve
