I went on a poker run this weekend and my `98 Xplorer wasn't running good at all. I cleaned the air filter yesterday thinking that would do it but I was wrong. Here are the symptoms: loss in accelleration, loss in top speed, loss in pulling power. I was riding yesterday on a flat surface in a straight line and couldn't go over 50mph. The only time I got it to 65mph(where it usually runs) is when I was going downhill. I was thinking maybe dirt in the carb or something like that. Its just been rebuilt 2 months ago so I don't think its ready for another rebuild. It still starts up and idles fine. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance. Lata.

Check to see if mud clogged your exhaust. Happened to mine during a dice run and was a simple fix. Same symptoms as well.

1. check exhaust for restriction (mud). rev it up in Neutral & beure it 'sounds' right. You can also take the plugs out of the exhaust & drive it around to see if it runs better.

2. Check throttle cable. I once heard of a guy who's adjuster vibrated loose, leaving so much slack in the cable, it wouldn't hit full throttle.

Check all the other suggestions and if you don't find anything, better check your compression.

This is a 2 minute fix that will drive you NUTs,I know,it happened to ME.You have a down spout on your exaust,it is partially plugged with mud.Take a screwdriver and clean it out, than watch the performance come back,

If any of the fix's the other guys mentioned don't work maybe it's your belt.Iknow mine would not wheelie in high and would not go faster than 53 mph, changed the belt and bingo.
