Honda 400ex cost to adjust valves
#1
Ok I will soon be getting a new Honda 400ex. Probably a 2002. I plan on doing all the basic mantinence myself and with some help of my dad. I will do the oil changes and Chain adjustments and stuff like that but the valves is whats worrying me. I want even try to do it myself so about how much will it cost to have the dealer I bought it from adjust them for me? I know that the price probably varies from dealer to dealer but I just want to get an estimate. Also how often will I need to have the valves adjusted if I just ride trails and dirt roads? One more question, It is how many miles will I need to go in between each oil change? Thanks Matt

I am wondering why you can't adjust the valves yourself? You can buy the service manual from your dealer for around $45 and a set of metric feeler gauges for about $5 and you will still be ahead of the dealer charging you $55 per hour for labor and I am sure they will charge you two hours. Checking and adjusting the valves is not difficult and the instructions in the service manual will walk you through it. The service manual recommends that you check them every 100 hours. As for changing the oil, I can't remember what the service manual says, but I like to change mine about every 20 hours or so. I am probably wasting money, but oh well. The oil change interval largely depends on the type of riding you do. Hard, hot riding will break the oil down a lot faster than moderate trail riding. Hope this helps.
