On my Foreman 450s the reverse selector **** is not working. You can downshift thru neutral into reverse without using this button. I need to repair this because the transmission can be damaged if the quad is not brought to a complete stop before hitting the reverse gear, not to mention this is a dangerous condition. I have checked the freeplay of the reverse assist lever below the left handbrake as shown in the owners manual and it seems to be correct. Where do I turn next to attempt to correct this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Follow the cable down to the motor and you will find it attached to a small lever on the side of the motor. You will probably find a stick or some other object stuck in there not allowing the lever to return. If that is not the case make sure the lever is not bent and moves freely. The other thing to check is that the cable moves freely in the housing. One of these things should be the problem.
Good luck
