Which tires are better for running on a hardpacked SX style track? Track is very tacky when moist and very slippery when dry. The three tires I was wondering about are the Holeshot MX,Turf Tamer, and Riken or equivilant. I have heard that the Holeshots wear very quick. Do they wear faster than turf tamers? This is a concern for me because I dont want to buy new tires every couple races. I may be wrong but I think the turf tamers and Riken fronts would be the way to go on this type of track and the Holeshot MX would be better for a loamy type track. It seems to me that the small dimples on the tamers would grip better. HELP!!!

If you wan to win - Holeshot MX all round. If you want the tires to last, Turf Tamers. MX's are soft compound and wear quickly, but who cares if you are winning!

XCT's are one of the best trail tire you can buy. 23-7-10 up front and 22-11-10 on the rear will give you Raptor or whatever extra clearence. They are 6 ply and you will probally never have another flat tire. They wear very well. Downside - they are heavy, and the front's are rounded in profile. If you want to trail ride - get XCT's. They are also good fro cross country racing, if you want to win on the track - Get MX's. Don't trail ride your MX's though unless you have a fat wallet! The MX's wear very quickly, but will make your bike handle like an F1 car. For MX tracks use the 19-6-10 in front (Soon to release a 20-6-10) and 18-11-8 rear. If there are no jumps or small jumps, use the 18-11-10 on a 10x8 rim for less side wall roll and better handeling.

Hope this helps. If you want more info - look at what the top racers are using! Holeshots!

I've heard of people having good luck running holeshot mx rears with the riken style front tires. Personally i think the riken style front tires are great hard packed compared to the holeshot mx's. As for the rear, i prefer the turf tamers, but i also race and ride in more of a sand type terrain, so i cant help you there, but my friend uses the MX's all around on his quad and his rear tires are still almost new, where as mine i just had to flip them around, but his front MX's are almost completely bald and my marshall radials are not even showing signs of where. he has 6 races on his tires and i only have 3 races, but i race a 250r in the pro-am class, and he has a 400ex and races b class. i dont know how much a difference that makes as far as what class. To answer your question i say Holeshot MX rears 18-11-8, and riken style front tires.

Razr's are good on the rear, very similar to the Holeshots XC. The fronts get mixed response. They turn great, but stopping power is not as good as the holeshots. Razr are only available in a 21-7-10 front, where as I believe the XCT front 23-7-10 is the best trail tire, while the 19-6-10 in the best MX track tire. If the track gets muddy, wet and rutted out, then the Razr would be a good choice I think (the 19 gets hung up on the deep ruts).

Best advice - read the mags, and see which racers are using what tires (and winning) on what type of track, then compare the track to where you ride the most, and buy them. Trail riding becomes a bit more subjective, but for my money in all but sandy and deep muddy conditions, the XCT's are the best.

I know I have asked this before, but y'all seem to really know what you are talking about, so I'd like to ask again....
I ride mostly trails (clay/mud/dirt), that are often pretty nasty w/ lots of mud holes. I also ride allot in a small feild behind the house, and some MX (hoping to ride more, but doubt if I do any racing.)
I would love a tire like the Bandit, but it only measures 20" tall and I want 22" for the trails. Would Holeshots give me the traction I need in the mud? I am talking about everything from EXTREMELY tacky clay, to soupy nasty 3" deep crap!
... or will something like a Sure-Track that is made for mud do "okay" for what riding I would do on an MX track? I know it varies and you don't know what tracks I am talking about, but in general... do MX tracks allow mud tires at all? I know one of them I ride on will, but don't know about the rest? What is the down side to mud tires? Can you find them that "perform okay?"

Thanks a ton.

Wood Warrior

The Bandits are now available in a 22 rear and a 23 front. These look like a nice tire, but I have never used one, or talked to anyone who has used them. The Sur trak are a nice light duty mud tire that perform on the trail. Also don't forget the Spider Trac. These sound like they might suit your needs as they are a good mud tire that perform fairly well on the trail. If you are mudding you need a good self cleaning tire like the Spider Trac. The Holeshots and Razr's clear well when you have good HP to spin them, but if you are not spining them, they tend to get fat with mud and become slick. I gather you ride a Warrior. If you do, get a 22 tire on a 10 rim for the clearence.

Do the Bandits now measure 22"? I was told that some of the people who ordered 22" Bandits had to send them back cause they only measured 20.5" and these people wanted 22's.
Anyone know for sure?
