Guys,
Today I installed a K&N powerjet kit on my DS.
2 problems...
#1. The junk brass screws in the carb suck! I spent more time working trying to get stripped screws out than I did working on the quad. I replaced them with allen head bolts.
#2. I have a hesitation now. I did exactly as the directions say for my application. 175 jet, needle on 2nd clip from top.
I don't notice it as much when it's cold but after it warms up here is what happens. Say for example I'm riding 15 mph in 2nd gear & try to accelerate it will. But if I'm in 3rd at 15mph & try it it will act like it has a miss, spit & sputter. If I roll into it slow it will take off. Once I get the rpms up it seems Ok then. But it doesn't seem to pull as good as it did stock. (maybe it's just me) But at least it does goes once the rpms are up.
Any ideas on a fix?
Thanks guys,

I am having the same problem. I was wondering if it might be the jetting.

Try adjusting the mixture screw. That worked for me.

Before I got my pipe, I had the kn and jet kit. 175 was way to big. I used 160 in the spring. Try either that or the 165. Factory settings were garbage. Your right about the screws on the bottom of the carb- garbage. Good luck on finding your right jet.

Sounds similar to the way mine ran after putting in that kit.Mine is 2000 so I did replace the spring& jet cup with 2001 parts.I went to the 170 jet, when the 175 did this to the performance. Not sure wether I turned air screw in or out ,but I did mess with,so experiment a little. Runs much better & the sputtering w/175 went away with 170,try it but be sure to do a plug check. Throttle response is alittle better than stock, but power is much better,I can lift the front end now.good luck.

I had better luck with the stock needle. With a K&N air filter, end-cap job, stock needle, I am running the 175 main jet. The biggest pain for me was the rev-limiter when doing jet runs, but it always ran smoother, accelerated more evenly with the stock needle. The K&N needle was erratic, uneven, with flat spots and hot spots.

DS650Ohio,
I did what you did, mainly because we are both from Ohio & I figured our altitude was close to the same. I put a 165 main in & it seems to have done the trick. The hesitation is gone. I'm not sure I've seen any performance gain. I'll continue to tinker & see what happens.
Everyone else, thanks for the tips too. I'd still be willing to listen to more advice, maybe there is something that will help me get just a little more out of it......

K&N makes a great filter, but the restriction [on a stock quad] is not coming from the filter. On a dyno, I saw less than 1HP gain when compairing a K&N filter in the box to a stock filter in the box. The restriction on the intake stems from the tube that runs from the air box to the carb. If you do not ride in the water alot, replace your current K&N[or stock] filter with the carb mount version. This move alone is worth around 3 dyno proven HP. It comes to about $20 per HP[if you get a pre-filter as well], thats some cheap power.

<< Knutz,
I wonder what the OEM paper filter would have done on the dyno, if mounted directly to the carb. I bet it would have been within 1 HP of what the K&N filter did (although why would anyone go to the effort of mounting a paper filter directly to the carb?).

Whoever's job it is to do the marketing for K&N needs a raise.

I remember reading an article in a sport truck magazine a few years back, where they installed a number of different items, and dyno tested each one separately. In other words they put on a K&N filter and dyno tested it (0.3 HP gain relative to stock), then put the stock filter back in and put on a set of headers and a cat forward system (9 HP gain), then put the stock exhaust manifold and cat forward system back on, and installed a cat back system (4 HP gain). Then they put all three items on together and came up with something like 12.6 HP total gain relative to stock.

I also remember reading on the TDR (Turbo Diesel Register) website a few years ago when they tried to prove how much gain a K&N filter was good for. On a stock truck it made less than 1 HP more power than the OEM filter did. They then went on to keep comparing the K&N filter to the stock filter with each performance mod they made. The stock Cummins diesel motor is rated at 245 HP, and they didn't start to see improvement from the K&N filter until the stock motor and exhaust had been modified to produce over 400 HP. At the 400+ HP level the K&N filter was good for about 5 HP on the dyno.

Interesting to say the least. Betcha I get flamed for saying the K&N filter doesn't do a whole lot for performance ...

I knew there was a reason why I still got the stock air cleaner on my '98 Dodge with Cummins and 60,000 miles. The air cleaner 'minder' hasn't even moved. I don't know that I will ever put a K&N on it, doesn't make sense money wise.
