Looking for feedback and opinions. Had decided on a 02 500 manual, however went to visit the dealer yesterday and he has a couple of 01's available going at a good price. If I shop around the difference is like $500 Canadian. Give me some feedback as to what you think abound the 01 vs 02 changes and improvements.
Thanks, Jeepersmitty

Jeepersmitty-
Do you mean the price difference between the '01 and '02 will only be around $500?, or there is a great deal on the '01s, of which you can probably negotiate within $500 at various dealers? From the last two posts under NewF's topic, it looks like the difference was about $700-would the $500 be on top of that, totaling $1,200??? If so, I think for that much money, I'd probably take that deal on the '01.

If however, the difference is only $500 between the new '02 and the '01, I'd opt for the newer '02. Boner made a good list a while back on the new more "subtle" changes that he noticed for '02-you might want to look back a couple weeks I think to find it-nice comparison there. Anyway, from my standpoint, that increased ground clearance is WELL worth the extra $500. That was much of the reason I put my spring spacer lift on, and the huge 27" 'Claws. The terrain I ride, and with all the logs I tow, I need lots of clearance. For me, that is well worth it, and the new '02 'Cats are up at a claimed 10.75", as opposed to 9.2" from last year. The other big difference would be they switched back to 8" wide tires up front, which will lighten the steering quite a bit. I don't see why they keep changing tires-in '99 they ran 26" stock. '00 they switched back to 25x10's all around, same as '01. Now, for '02, they have a different, lesser quality tire (from what I've heard) in 25x8 up front, and 25x10 in the rear. I don't know why they would have changed the 375 and up to the new Dunlops, while the 300's on down kept the 489's. The 489's are a good all-around tire in my opinion, for a stock tire.

The other new feature that would be really nice to have is the new headlights on the '02s. They are supposedly a TON brighter than the older style, which really suck for night driving, quite honestly. My dealer said at the show he was at, they were using the new '02 'Cats to unload all the other machines, as the lights were brighter. He said there is absolutely no comparison over the older years. I haven't seen it myself, but he was very impressed with the new headlights. Granted, they're probably more expensive to replace if you break them, but safety wise, I'd rather have a lot of light, then just the little "candles" on my 'Cat. Besides, you can fabricate some good headlight guards pretty easily to protect them if you're worried about that.

Anyway, best of luck with the decision,

Mike

Thanks for the response.Sorry for the confusion. The total difference would be $500. After the post, I all ready had my answer. Made a couple of calls to more dealers and the difference is now $300. Guess it's a no-brainer. NeWF and I are in the same area and visiting the same dealers. You have to understand we are talking Canadian dollars, $300 bucks is the cost of a two-four of beer in American dollars.( a two-four is 24 beer, sort of a snack pack with a couple of buddies.)Thanks, jeepersmitty

Jeeper-
Yeah, when I saw the $8,000 price tag from NewF's post, I knew immediately it had to be Canadian! That's what I meant, for the $500, I think that would translate to around $350??? of our money-don't know what the exchange rate is anymore-loose track too much! heh heh heh. Anyway, enjoy your 2-4 and the "couple buddies"-though I warn you, watch out for "Jose" and his gang-those meheecano's have a bad habit of taking over and "regulating", soon self-promoting themselves to "bouncers", and try to kick everybody out of the party! heh heh heh (cuervo-tequilla) -bad experience with that stuff once, can't even smell it anymore. Best of Luck to ya, Hope you enjoy whatever you get!

Jeepersmitty,
That is kinda neat how we visited the place on the same day. I was there at around 4:00 though. I had been on my way back to Sackville from camping in Weymouth (outside of Digby) and saw that a dealer had some new cats. So by the time I got home (3:00) I couldn't wait to call Johnson's.
So what have you decided about which year you are going to buy? And what were the prices at High gear and that other dealer you were going to call? Even though Corbett's is cheaper, I still think i will probably be going for Johnson's. He said he is planning on being at the Sport and RV show in march this year. Since you can get pretty good deals there, I think that is my tentative date of purchase. I believe last year you could get a winch installed for very cheap, or 18 monthes of extended warrenty for free. Either way it was pretty sweet.

I know what you mean about Johnson's, it's only 200 bucks and I too, like the place. I called Donkin Tire in Amherst, quoted list at $8599. Called High Gear quoted $7614. I e-mailed them yesterday for details. So now the difference between the 02 and 01 is only 300 bucks, I drive a Jeep and the 02's looks so good. I think Johnson's would come down in price, but he has the 01's to move out and has to keep the price up on the 02's until the 01's are gone. Kingston is more of a drive but 400 bucks is 400 bucks.
Thanks, Jeepersmitty

When I got my 2001 man.,I got it from Donkin Tire and the price quote was taxes in.I would check again,8599is about 7400plus tax.I really would recommend Donkin Tire because any questions I had I would talk directly to the A.C. mechanic(Dana).I talked to him for 15 minutes over the phone asking about previous A.C. problems. He was very truthfull with the pros and cons of the machines.
By the way ,went home to the rock this summer and seen the tour group on the ferry with me.Looks like a blast to do,I have a couple of buddies that have done the trip and had a great time.
Any of you going to the ATVANS jam in Salt springs in sep.,I have been to all 4 and it is only getting better all the time.It should be a good time.Hope it keeps raining for a couple of more days, can at least go back on the trails then.

Wow $7600 is pretty good! I see what you mean about Johnson's keeping the price up until the 01s are gone. It makes sense too. I have plenty of time to wait and see if he puts the price down. As for Donkin Tire... if that is their price taxes in then it is really good! But I find it hard to believe they would say a price that high for a 500 manual without STRESSING that the taxes are in if, infact, they are in. I too think that the 02s look better. I would say in the long run you would be more satisfied getting the machine you truely want even though it is a few hundred bucks more. And like you said, I don't think $300 is a big enough savings to get the older model either.

So you went to the RocK too? I was there going across on the railbed, but not with a tour. However we did pass a few on the way. WHAT A TIME! I think it would be fun to do it with a tour for the simple reason: the more the merrier! When we would meet others along the track we would usually talk for a while and share stories and advice. The during our trip (there were 7 of us) we had beautiful weather except for a few hours of downpour one day. It was still welcomed to wash the dust off the bikes and keep the dust down for a while.

Our trip was all planned to go from Gander to Port Aux Basques, but the night before we left, one of our buddies called and said he had found out that the track was closed in Corner Brook. So we replanned that night to go from Gander to Howlie (outside of Deerlake) and back. It was over 300 some odd miles for the whole trip. However during the trip while talking to people who had come from Port Aux Basques on their way to Argentia said that the RCMP will escort you around that part of the track. So we could have done the whole thing to begin with! Oh well, the trip was still ABSOLUTLY great and we now have more experience and have learned from this years mistakes to make next years trip even better! (we are doing the whole thing this time, excluding the section to argentia).

I have visited some of the tour sites like rollontherock.com and such but it doesnt' say how much it costs. Do you have any idea? I am just curious.

I would be going to the Jamboree.. if i had my AC now.. but I don't, and won't until March. But at least I will have it from next year on! Also, would you happen to know if there is usually an Arctic Cat tent at this event that might have some bikes on display or for possible test drives and such? If not, does this sort of thing ever happen at any rallies or jamborees in NS?

It is pouring out now so hopefully it won't be long until the woods is open for use again.

thanks

NeWf

Yes, there is usually a Arctic dealer tent at the Jamboree, and you do get to take test drives. As for other rallies, there is not dealer tents. Once again, for Donkin Tire, I would phone and confirm the price, taxes in.

Hope this can help. See you on the rail bed.
