Utility Plow Usage
#1
Does anyone user their ATV and plow to regrade gravel roads? Are these plows heavy enough to do such work, or are they mainly used for just snow?
I live on a gravel road that is about 1 mile long and would like to work on the road once in a while to keep the ruts from getting too large. I am just not sure if the blades could handle that kind of work.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

The ATV plow blades work OK for moving around loose rock, or moving loose piles of dirt. The problem is they have no down force on them except their own weight, so they would tend to float or bounce over washboards instead of cutting them. You could rig some extra weight to the plow, but then you would have trouble lifting it up and down. The blade really needs to have some down force (i.e. hydraulic pressure for a tractor blade) to be effective at cutting washboards. Hope that helped. I took two 15 or 25 lb. bar bell weights and hung them off the back side of the plow, one near either end. Those seemed to help a lot for creating pretty good downforce for plowing gravel and for getting a really nice scrape when plowing snow. Nice I used the winch to raise and lower the plow, I'm not too worried about the added weight. If you're using a manual lift, it might become a problem.

I don't think you will be happy with a front blade on an ATV for grading roads. Pushing snow or a little gravel is one thing, cutting
through rut buildup and filling holes in roads call for more than an ATV blade can deliver.
I have a friend that built an ATV box scraper(4'). He it pulls with his 300 4x4 in medium range second gear. He is a foreman for a large excavating company so he knows what it takes to move and level large quantities of dirt. The key to making something like this work is weight. They weigh about 350 lbs. It has a tongue that attaches to the trailer hitch on the ATV and has two wheels on the rear. It is raised and lowered by an electric screw jack. IT WORKS GREAT! It makes quick work of a halfmile driveway.
