Is it possible to increase the top speed of a 2 stroke ATV by just installing an aftermarket pipe with silencer? I ask because I think that if gearing is not changed the top speed would be the same. It may accelerate faster but the top speed will be the same unless the gearing is changed. Am I right or am I missing something? I ask because I have a 1985 Tri-Z 250 with a stripped stock exhaust and an Answer Hot Tip silencer and I think that it tops in fifth too fast or easy, (at least on pavement). I have heard a lot of good things about the LRD exhaust for the Tri-Z but I was wondering if it would give me more top speed if I keep the current gearing. My reasoning is that more top end is more power at top but not more RPM’s, therefore same top speed (stock gearing) but more force to pull stronger in fifth gear. Any comments?
PS. BTW I am running 14-44 sprockets with 20X11X9 rear tires (stock is 13-44 sprockets with 22X11X8 rear tires).

Most aftermarket exh. systems will allow higher RPM's with higher peak power numbers. Instead of peak power at 7600 RPM, you can feasibly get peak power now at 8400 RPM. More RPM with decent power=more top speed independent of gearing.

And Lonestarbanshee...on the Fox sticker poser thing...no shiznit...I'm not a fan of stickers anyways unless there's something in it for me, so I just love all the Fox posers...

In another word, yep. My Banshee did 72 stock, 74 with K&N added and jumped to 82 when I added pipes/silencers. That's because it would rev higher and still produce more power. Also, a 2 stroke RPM is pretty much limited by the pipe (all else being equal that is). A 4 stroke won't gain any top end speed by addition of ANYTHING (except rev limiter) if it can rev out in top gear already with stock gearing.

Get a pipe; you'll go faster and your tri-z will thank you.
