i have 4 sportsman's, and mostly ride them at about 1000mt altitude, but, whenever we take them up to the woods, at like 1700 mt (1900 ft difference, give or take a few) they don't ride well at all. i supose i have to change the jet needle at that altitude, but i don't know what kind of needle i need or where to get it. i live in mexico, so there is no "visit your dealer" for me. i need to take care of it myself.

Sorry, I don't know about the SP's carbs, so I can't say for sure, but do you know whether or not you have an adjustable needle? If you do, try raising (???) the clip a notch or two to lean it out a bit. Is it kind of "sluggish" maybe, or acting like it's flooded at all at the higher altitude? My guess is it's just a little too rich for that higher altitude. It might be possible you can adjust it enough with simply moving the clip on your needle to compensate for the difference of the higher altitude, but again, I don't know for sure. If you need to change the jet, your main jet is what controls 3/4 to full throttle, and is about the easiest to mess with. They cost around $3.00 from your dealer, but as you can't go to the dealer, I'd maybe see if you could order one online from someone???? A sure fire way to tell is next time you're up at that altitude, do a full wide open throttle run, then kill the engine with the throttle pegged. Do not let off the gas till the engine dies. Soon as it cools enough, pull the plug and see what it looks like. If it's black, which I'm guessing it will be, you're too rich, and need to adjust either the main jet, or possibly compensate by adjusting the clip on your needle.

I'm sorry I can't help you more than that, but it might be enough to get you on the right track. Best of Luck with that,

Mike
