Help! I have a 95 Sportsman 400 that stalls every time you put it in reverse, unless you hold the overide button in. I've drained the gas, and it starts and idle's fine in nuetral and forward. Also, in forward when going approx. 20 mph and you punch and go to wide open throttle, it will stall, until you back off the throttle. If you ease the throttle up it will maintain speed, and run fine. This ATV only has 295 miles on it. Any suggestions? Thanks Joe

 

clean or change your air filter,by ckecking your spark plug you'll see if the engine is lean or rich,with that problem here it look like too rich setting in the carb...but before doing anything upgrade the jets
up i size and see what happen,if it still worse you'll have to drop the jets til the engine run fine...

 

kinda sounds like the reverse overide limtiter went south Un hook it and try that .

 

Another thing to check out might be if the ETC is adjusted properly. Basically, make sure you don't have too much slack in the throttle cable. I would guess either that or a bad rev limiter from what I understand your problem is.

 

The ETC and the air filter (still may need cleaned) would act the same in reverse and forward also so rule those out.

You are more than likely looking at a electrical problem. Electrical is usually not too bad on the Polaris machines as long as you follow the shop manual step by step. Don't hunt and peck or you will become confused and more than likely frustrated, follow the shop manual. Good luck.

 

I had more time to think about this and came up with a few more things.
Be sure the spark plug is good, and the wire is on tight, not only tight to the plug, but the wire tight in the boot. Some wires are actually 'screwed' into the boot and can come loose.
Also, under the front plastic panel (take off the front rack to take it off) you will find a connection board with all sorts of terminals and connectors on it. If there is something wacky going on electrical, it is often a loose or corroded connection under there somewhere.

 

With that low mileage.....hmmm gummed up. Try changing your fuel filter along with the gas draining. Check Seafoam's compatability with your local dealer, or maybe drop your carb for cleaning and inspection....Doc's orders, ride more and call us in the morning.
