Looking To Buy Raptor...???
#1
Ok, I am looking to buy a 2001 used Raptor. I live in oklahoma. Anyway, i was wondering if there is anything specific that i should look to be wrong with the Raptor? I have read some stuff about the 2nd gear, and loose steering? Are these major problems? Is there a way to tell, or any signs that indicate transmission problems? Please help me find a good ATV..Thanks...

Anything with the transmission is a "major" problem, but I seriously wonder how widespread the problem is, if there is a problem at all. Yamaha says there isn't, but nobody trusts them. I've had mine since March and have ridden trail, dunes, and a little MX, and have had no problems. I did adjust the mixture on the carbs to reduce the possibility of the boot blow-off. As far as loose steering, mine was "dry steering", as in no grease in the steering stem bushing. Take it for a test ride, treat it like any other used quad that you are thinking of buying. I own a Warrior and a Raptor, and I would recommend the Raptor any day. The power is addicting, the overall design is 13 years newer, and it jumps better.

ok, thanks for the info guys. I went to a local yamaha shop, and he said that they had only serviced 2 for the transmission, and only 1 or so for the carb. He said that the 2 that they had fixed were both broken coming down off some jumps. How hard do u think it would be to change it out myself, if it did go bad? Does anyone service their own things. I am pretty good when comes to mechanical stuff...so i guess I could always try...tell me what you think?

Joe, I've had mine for a year now with no problem at all. It's never been back to the dealer and I haven't replace any part except for all GYT accessory installed.
It's definately the best quad I've had.
If you're buying a used one, first find out why they're selling it. What's the history of the machine as far as problems - this will give you some idea how the machine was treated.
What's the overall appearence? Does it look like it's been rode hard and put up wet? Who's the primary rider and what's he/she like?
If it's clean and look good, chances are, it's been well maintained. Test ride to see if it feels OK. Steers straight with no vibration. No abnormal noise like knocking or grinding noise from engine/tranny. Look at chain and sprockets - that'll tell you how much it's been ridden and how it was maintained.
By the way, how much are they asking for used?

well here in oklahoma, i have found used ones anywhere from 4995 to 6200. I am really in the prelim. stages of looking, but i have been eyeing 2 that are both $5500. I think that i could get them down to $5000, at least I hope. i will probably be getting something in a week or 2. I just hope that I dont get one that thats fouled up...
