Installing new carburetor jets in a Raptor
#1
Hello Everyone,
I just ordered the Big Gun "Quiet Series" exhaust system for my machine and I need to replace the existing main and pilot jets in the carburetor. My question is this, what is the necessary steps to remove the carburetor from the machine? Do you have to take the fuel tank and front fenders off to do that? Can you please give me your thoughts and concerns?
Any information would be greatly appreicated!!
Thank You,
IronBear

Your first time at this is painful, you have to remove the front plastic, the lights (at least the first time), the gas tank. that gets you down to the top of the carbs. I dont remove the throttle linkage, you then use a hex key to loosten the clamps on the carb boots (4) and wiggle the carbs out. The screws on the top of the carbs are really tight so you might want to use an impact driver or wide handle screw driver with a flat phillips so you dont strip those out. putting them back is a pain, if you dont get them in right you could ruin your engine so double check while your bike is still in pieces before putting eveything back. It gets easier each time you do it, took me over an hour the first time, and I can rejet in about 20 minutes now. hope this helps

If all you need to change is the main jets, you can :
1. remove the exhaust pipe
2. remove the starter
3. remove the carb bowls without taking any thing else off
This is what I did to change my jets a while back.
Good luck,
Lorrin

sorry for confusion ironbear, my instructions were for removing the carbs, and included info on pulling the top of the carbs for slide and needle valve adjustment, most people have trouble with those screws, I should have included flip the carbs over and remove the base to get at main and pilot jets

Hi vraptor,
I hear quite a few people on here adjusting thier needles on their carburetors. Is this a manitory step when replacing the stock exhaust with a performance exhaust? The reason that I ask this question is because Paul at Big Gun said that the only modifications that should be done to the carburetors is to install bigger main jets and replace the pilot jets. I plan on purchasing the jets at my Yamaha dealer.
Dynojet recommends that you cut away the inside of the snorkel to remove the restriction. Would this be a good step to take along with the rejetting of the carburetors or is this more or less an option on my part?
Thanks again,
IronBear

It is not essential to replace the needle jet, it afects the 1/4->3/4 throttle circuit where the main jets affect the 3/4->full throttle. If you get the dynojet kit it comes with new needles. I cant honestly say that I noticed the difference but that may be the high altitude up here. As for the snorkle cut out it is probably more important if you dont take off the airbox lid, or modify it (I cut 4 1"holes in mine). I didnt like the idea of something blocking airflow anyway, so I cut em out. A lot of these things are more important to those of you around sea level, anything to boost hp and torque is worth doing.
