I have a 1999 Prarie 400 4x4.The hot light comes on at times.I have noticed the fan does not run.I shorted the two wires on the fan sensor switch and the fan runs fine.So i took out the sensor and tested it in hot water on the stove and the switch works, it turns the fan on at 202 degrees and off at 196 deg.My question is how do you tell if the water pump is good,is it like a boat with rubber paddles or a car with metal vanes. Is this a common problem with this model? Any idea's or suggestions will be welcome.

I am by no means a 400 expert but I will give you some suggestions. You state that the fan and the sensor for it work fine. Maybe the sensor for the temp light is bad, turning on low. Can you test it? As far a the water pump, check the kawi web site. They have exploded parts diagram for there quads. Try going to http://www.buykawasaki.com/site/home/ and click on view parts diagram. I haven't heard of this as a cronic problem.

I installed a temp gage on my 400. The temp ranges from 130 to 180 degrees max , during normal operation. The fan seems to come on at any temp between 160 to 180 degrees.

I did some more checking and noticed that anti freeze is coming out of the hose at the bottom of the water pump housing. This is letting the water level go down in the radiater. When this happens the fan sensor is not in the water but instead is in hot air which makes the sensor not work.So i went to my dealer and looked at there shop manual and the first thing it says in the cooling section is if there is water coming out of the pump housing hose the water seal is leaking and needs replacing,so i guess i have located the problem.A temp guage is a good idea thou where did you get one and what style or brand is it?

Thanks for your input,Wobly

I just went to an automotive parts supply and purchased the smallest temp gage I could find ( 1 1/2 inch ? )
I removed the fan sensor switch from the cylinder head, installed a brass tee, screwed the fan sensor in one end and the temp sensor in the other. I drilled a hole in the right fender and mounted it . I sealed everything up nice and tight and thats it.
