2002 scrammy 5004x4 vs 2002 scrammy 400X 4x4

I currently own a 2002 scrambler 500 4x4 and I am wondering what the difference between the two are? I am thinking of trading for the 400 and wondering which one is faster in a race and how do they differ on trail riding? I know that the 400x weighs 503lbs and the 500HO weighs 559lbs so I think that this alone should make a difference. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

We get this post all the time. Stock for stock both the 500 4 stroke and the 400 2 stroke are about the same. But, when wanting more speed, 2 strokes are easier to modify. You can get much more gain from adding a pipe to a 2 stroke than a 4 stroke. To me, it's just a matter of preference. Two strokes are faster, but are not as easy to maintain (ex. more changing spark plugs, rebuilds).

I would have to agree with OffRder15. The four strokes are much easier to mantain. But main do I hate change the spark plug
I know dat's right! I haven't decided if I'd rather drill a hole in the gas tank or pull the head off it for access! Still, although it's harder to hotrod, I'll take a 4 banger. If nothing else, just longevity.

The spark plug issue on the 2-stroke is nothing like the 500 4-stroke. The plug sits up on top......easy to access.....even without pulling side panels or anything. I've had a sp500, and it has the same engine as the scrambler 500..........the plug is recessed deep into the top of the engine. Not only is it hard to get to, sometimes it is really difficult to get the boot off the plug.
As far as which one is more reliable........that is definitely a toss-up. I believe I'd rather take the 2-stroke. As long as the air filter is kept clean and the oil tank kept full, I believe you could get just as many miles without major maintenance as the 500. On the 4-stroke, they are notorious for eating cams, you have to change the oil, and the water pump seal is more likely to go out (my experience anyway).
So, that being said.........it's really just a matter of preference......4-stroke or 2-stroke.
