Hello all,,

I want to get smaller tires cause I got a slash on one of my tires on my quad this weekend.. and I was wondering since cars that are running diffrentials and gears in the rear when you put a smaller tire on the rear it will rev up faster and it will also pick up speed alot faster...

What size of tires do you all recomend? I have seen some nice smaller tires like the ones that are on the Honda 400EX they are 20x10-9 and mine are 22x10-9 would it be wise and has any other 250ex owners ever tried messing with tire sizes?

On your machine, you had better give carefull consideration about changing tire sizes because with it being shaft drive, you won't have any way to change the gearing if you decide you don't like the gearing change.

As you said, smaller tires will change the gearing and give you better acceleration but will also take away from your top speed.

The 400EX tires will fit on your wheels with no problems but aren't any more puncture resistant than the tires that came on your machine.

My suggestion to you is to get a buddy of yours with a 400EX agree to swap wheels with you for a few hours to see what affects it gives your machine and whether you can deal with those changes. The wheels have the same bolt pattern, so it wouldn't take but a minute to swap them. Just keep in mind that while you got your buddies tires on there, YOU are responsible for any damage that comes to them.

Knowsalot, The puncture happened when my niece was riding my quad and she went over some glass... so I dont think thats much of a problem.... My only problem is I know it will help on low end and mid but its higher end that im concerned with.. Cause yesterday I raced a nephew of mine and he just got a blaster and was smoking me ... I felt my quad sluggish on 4th and 5th like when you shift premature ... so I was thinking that smaller tires would help... so thats why I decided to ask this question...

Anyone ever try the tire from a 400EX on there 250EX?

All my friends and nephews ride Yamahas.....

Holeshots work very well in So Cal riding conditions. We started out with 21" front and 20" rear Standard Holeshots. They are nice because they are light, and the little bike pushes them easy. Plus, they add a bit of width (stability) to the bike. BUT, the small front tires made the steering a bit to quick-almost squirly!! So, we changed to 22" front and 20" rear Holeshot XC's. These are heavier than the Standards, but these things are indestructable! The 22" fronts tame the steering just enough, and the 20" rears give more bottom end power.

YZGUY, how do you feel the quad at higher gears like 4th and 5th with the 20s? thats the same exact tire I wanna run the Holeshot 20 but I dont want to invest money if its gonna kill me at top end.... I dont mind that much but gotta keep up with the rest for now... Im getting a 400ex in like 5 months and the 250ex will be the wife's toy but for now I gotta make the best of this one....

I put my stock 400EX tires/wheels on my Son's 250EX and it works great.... lot's more power everywhere! I don't see why Honda didn't go with 20's in the first place.

You must know that you will reduce your top speed by 10% in each gear. (do the math)

Also, tall soft sidewalls add to your suspension. If you install a 6-ply tire with a lower sidewall your overall suspension travel will be decreased. This can lead to a harder ride and harder landings off jumps.

I don't feel like the loss of top end is that noticeable. This is primarily riden as a recreational ride though, so top end isn't a big issue. But, it is nice to have extra bottom end if you get yourself in a tight spot on a steep climb!
