Help with my first motor tear down.........250R
#1
This winter is going to be very boring up here so I need a project to work on so I have decided to tear down my 250R. I will probably paint the frame, and I am going to open up the motor put in a new piston and replace some bearings, I always here people talking about replacing some bearings in a 2 stroke but I can't recall which ones they are anyone know ?? While I have it all apart what else should I replace or check on?? I am doing new wheel bearings, axle bearings, swingarm bolt is getting replaced, new swingarm bearings, If I save up enough $$ I will get TCS front shocks and plastic. This project will probably not be done till February or march seeing as I have no intention of riding I in the deep snow this year. Thanks for any help you can offer.

one thing is the swingarm bolt? is it bent? doesn't matter, when the motor is apart check for plat in the main bearing by wiggling the connecting rod look in maint. book for tolerances. feel the cylinder for any scrtatches if scratched have it resleeved or bored if its a niclesil cylender, you will have to replace the sleeve. clutch plates too if glazed over. i did this all to my old cr250 in my motocross days lots of work but fun too, good luck

This past summer i rebuilt my entire engine....it isn't in running order quite yet though, lol. I bought it from a guy in a box, and put the whole thing together. The bearing in the cases don't really have name i think, just got to www.servicehonda.com and look at their charts, they will have every part on the entire quad for you to purchase or get part numbers. But what you should do, is get a maint. manual, and check alll the clearances and gaps to make sure nothing is worn down. Good luck and write back with any questions, cause i've been through the whole engine, transmission and all

I have a clymer manual BUT it it for 85-87 !!! and I have an 88
Is spliting the cases something I can do myself or do I need someone to do that for me ?

Your clymer manual should work for an 88 as well. IMO this job is much easier with the flywheel puller, impact wrench and the crankshaft assembly tools. I would replace the main bearings/seals, probably the countershaft bearing (near drive sprocket) will be rough, and check all other bearings and crank against specifications. Typically I replace mains/seals and counter shaft bearing every 2-3yrs and have replaced all bearings and crank on probably 5 year intervals. If you need a picture of the case separator tool e-mail (rbracing11@msn.com) me and I'll try to send a picture. You could probably make one up on your own.

I have taken out the motor tonight and a bunch of other things I only had 1 1/2 hours to work today so I didn't get alot done. Tomorow I will attempt to take off the swingarm but i am betting that the swingarm bolt is going to be a b!tCh to take out. I am getting some boxes together so i don't get my stuff mixe up.
My ball joint boots are all ripped what can I do about this ?? I dont have $$ for new A arms.

I wouldnt recomment splitting the cases if you havent done it before. I did it on mine and screwed it up kind of, ended up having it totally rebuilt about 6 months later cause of my crappy job. Its not cheap to have done though, so you might want to think about what else you need besides that, if there anything more pressing.
