Couple Questions
#1
What is the difference(if any) between boring and honing a cylinder? Also, I have read on here to take your cylinder to an auto mechanic rather than a motorcyle mechanic, because it is cheaper and faster. Anyone else do this?? Another thing is I decided I might as well have it ported and polished while apart, how much is this going to cost and could a local shop do it or should I send it off somewhere? Thanks guys, I know I am asking alot of questions lately, but this is my first rebuild and I want to do it right.

Boring involve using an actual metal cutting instrument on a mill or specialized machine, to cut metal away to create a new size bore, or to clean up major wall damage.
Honing involves a simple grinding stone fixture that's spun up and down inside to give the desired finnish to a bore. If a bore hasn't suffered major damage from wear ect, it may be honed only without being rebored for a new piston.

OK, so honing just cleans up minor scrathes in the cylinder, thanks for clearing that up. I am pretty sure I will have to bore then because there is a fairly deep gouge(sp?) in it. But what are the average rates for a bore? I've been told anywhere from $30-$50
