300ex Questions
#1
Hey, Im thinkin about gettin a 300ex and i would like to mod it alot. I have ridden 300ex's before so i know what the power is like and everything. I would like to race it, and was wondering, could you take 400 ex a-arms and put them on, and instead of putting 400ex shocks, put like Works AT Steelers w/rezzies on there. Would that work out and make it lower too ? I was also wondering what are good big bore kits for it ? I really like the value of the powroll 352 kit, its cheap and they say good power out of it. WEll, thanks whoever can help me. See ya

If you're not already stuck with a 300EX, why in the world would you buy one and then spend a bunch of money to hop it up when there are other machines out there with double the hp stock? As I've said before, building up the engine without re-engineering the whole suspension (shocks, a-arms, swing arm, axel, etc.) will give you a poor handling piece of crap. The EX is designed to handle the meager amount of power and speed it produces stock. Even if you only plan on drag racing it (zzzzzzz) there will be so many stock machines that can dust it, it wouldn't be worth the effort.
Why not look for a good used Banshee? They're WAY more fun than a 300EX and they give alot more bang for the buck when it comes to building a race engine.

I had a 300ex with Powroll's 352 kit. It put out good power. I put Burgard a-arms on the front with works performance shocks. The front handled great, the weak link is the rear suspension. No matter what I did, no matter what swingarm or rear shock I used, the rear just wouldn't handle. If I were you, I would try to find a 400ex. You can find used ones reasonable now that they've been around for a few years.

TRXter, The reason i would like to have a 300 and do that, is because im comfortable on a 300ex. Banshee's are cool and all, but i dont like the light switch power band and the fact of rebuilding them. When you do have to, its usually a basketcase. I would like a 400ex, but i can never really get comfy on one. I think i might settle with a 400, but i dont know.. its more expensive to mod a 400 too. And with a 330 kit for the 300ex, you can keep up with 400ex's. And i can get a used 300ex for probably 2500 and you can find 400ex's like that around here. They sell like a french hooker. thanks for helpin me with the info letitsnow

With a little saddle time you can get comfortable on just about anything. Also, for alot less than it would cost to pump up a 300EX, a Banshee can be tuned for more mid range and a broader power band. As far as a big bore 300EX staying up with a 400, I had one come after me last spring at Pismo before I sold my 400EX. He was very close to me for the first 50 yds, or so. Then we hit the whoops, I shifted into 4th, and that was the last I saw of him. There's just no way to make one of those Frankenstein bikes stick with a real sport machine in the rough stuff. The 400EX is a much better quad than the 300. It out performs it in every catagory except going backwards.
