When I stop the motor of my KVF 650, the fan is always running for at least 5 minutes even when the ambiant temperature is below 20 F, I don't like that at all. I feel that the bike is running at a too high temperature, the radiator fin are very clean (as new)the cooling fluid is at the right level, I would like to know if somebody has changed the thermosthat for a lower one if so what is the degree of the new one? and is it made by Kawasaki? I have found that this is pretty normal for this machine. When I first took mine out on my first trip it was abou 89C out. My fan was runing quit a bit and I was concerned soI asked a few of my buddies that have 650's and they each said their fans ran quit a bit also. As a matter of fact I just got in from dragging a trail in the back of my house. It is about 11C outside right now and when I parked my 650 in the barn the fan kicked on for about a minute. Don't forget that there is one hell of a power plant under your butt and it's gonna run hotter then most machines anyway. I'd be more nervous if you never heard the fan run, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree.
I had a '96 Sportsman 400 and the fan hardly ever came on. Before I knew it the fan rusted up and never ran. I ended up overheating quite a bit.
Has anyone had their 650 overheat at all yet?

My fan runs all the time too. My 650 had the temp light come on several times during a dice run . It was very frustrating. I've read about a few other people with overheating problems as well.

I have been wondering if this is normal too. I would think that a v-twin is going to run hotter. I was on a ride about 3 weeks back when the temp was in the high 20s and my fan would kick on every now and then. I thought that the outside temp would keep the engine cool enough without the fan kicking on. I wasnt doing anything more than some casual trail riding. I just changed my coolant last night just to see if there were any deposits in the fluid but it was clean as can be. I'll be curios to see how everything works out in hotter weather.

I'm new to this forum and I don't have a ATV YET. I was trying to decide on which one I want and after reading the forms and riding a bunch of them I think the 650 praire is the only way to go. I have learned a lot from the post thank you to every one that post it was very informative. It made my decition easy. Any way back to the cooling problem I usually only read but I have a background in sport cars and they make a additive that will reduce the temp by 40 degrees. It can be bought at most hot rod shops I think Auto Zone even carries it, its about 20 -25 bucks but you only need a little and a friend may need it also and you could split the bill. Here is an artical on it out of Jegs.

Pro-Blend 40 Below Cooling Additive

Quickly and easily lower your water temperature up to 40°!
Pro Blend's 40 Below coolant additive coats the combustion chamber areas from the water jacket side and dramatically cools them. What this means to you is leaner jetting, more power and a cooling system that can cool down more than twice as fast between rounds! Perfect for use in any water-cooled vehicle including everyday drivers, tow vehicles, motorcycles, circle track and drag cars. Most autos require 2 cans, motorcycles take approximately 6 ozs.

I hope this can be of some help.
