14 tooth counter shaft sprocket on a Raptor?
#2
I run one on my 01. The acceleration is proven better with my set-up. I seriously doubt much more top speed being available with the tall gearing, unless some serious power is available. Have you dragged an 01 Raptor yet?

no, i haven't even bought the Raptor yet, just sold my scrambler and the wife thinks i need to wait untill spring (and so do i) but i do remember reading somewhere that the 2002 was a little slower then the 2001 (its just heresay as far as im concerned)
but for the dunes i thought it would be nice, and why wouldnt it add a higher top speed? does the Raptor run out of power in 5th? or is it tough to hit the rev limiter in 5th? ive never rode one, but it is the quad im going to get, regardless of all the problems other guys have had with it,

As I recall, the '02 was only a little slower through the first 3 gears, which were the ones that were changed. Since the ratio changes were small, I think on the '02 I would keep the 13 in front and go to a 38 or 39 in the rear. No matter what, you'll want a ProDesign/K&N air filter setup with a Dynojet kit to give you that extra little edge. NINE WEEKS UNTIL OPENING DAY! Sorry that just slipped out. As far as waiting until spring for the Raptor, the present promos expire the end of February, so wait until the first week of March to see what kind of deals Yamaha has. Lat year I picked up a '02 TTR90 for one of the kids in April and got 12 months no interest, no payments. Free money for a year! Are you getting a white, black, or blue Raptor? (The blue ones are faster, really!)

man 95warrior, you sound just like one of my riding buddies!
<< the blue one is faster >>
im going with the black/white,
you see, i was asking this question because i wanted to keep up with the blue ones

The stock gearing in 4th and 5th is the same on the 01 and 02, and it's geared very high. The Raptor does'nt hit the rev limiter in 5th already, there is'nt enough power at high prm's to "pull" the quad faster than low 70's. After about 6500 rpms the power drops off along with the torque curve. After that point, the speed stabilizes and it's all over. The 14 tooth sprocket may help a tad on top speed, but not a considerable amount because of the beforementioned reasoning.
The reason why you can gear the Raptor up and improve acceleration is you are taking advantage of the Raptor's awesome torque curve.
Don't wait 'till spring! Get the Raptor now! Come spring, she will have spent the money on carpet, siding, or anything else that you think is perfectly fine now.

na, i think she treasures life more than that () actually it was her idea for me to get the Raptor, she was tired of hearing me complain about the scram( heavy, no gears to stir, and the final straw: wild bill beat me on his 400 ex,) so i sold it, now i need to save some cash, might not make first ride at the dunes this spring, but ill damn sure make the second,
and dont you find it kinda funny that none of us are working on a friday morning?
i personally like the long 4 days, and then a long weekend,
thanx for the input fellas

95warrior: 9 Weeks till opening day of what? Silver Lake? Can you tell me how Silver Lake is? We are planning a trip, probably many if we like it, this spring when everything warms up. Haven't done much sand riding and no dune riding, it looks like a ton of fun!
