wow is this thing fun !! The guy I bought it from knew less then I did, or so it seemed. It has some of the same problems I have seen posted here .... chain roller ... battery tends to run down, though a charge seems to get things ok for a day or two .. no big deal. What has me concerned is a red light (oil, temp) after a hard ride of 2 or three min. or 15 or 20 min of slow ride around the yard. The light goes off and stays off if I let it sit for a bit, but does it again after awhile. Seems to me it is overheating, the fan never comes on, and the coolant level is about 4 or 5 inches from topped off, should it be full? Shouldn't the fan have come on before the red light? How do I check the oil level?, maybe that is what the little red devil is trying to tell me. I need an owners manual and shop manual and plan to order them asap. But this thing is begging me to come ride now !! Any help is appreciated. I have a toll free phone number I can email anyone willing to give me some pointers.

Sound like your fan or fan switch is out!The oil dip stick is up front on the left.In front and below your handle bars. There are two marks on the dip stick upper and lower make sure the oil is in the 3/4 area of the top mark.

Too be safe, I wouldn't run it until you check a few things out.
The coolant should not be down. You could have bad water pump seals causing coolant to enter crankcase which would result in milky oil. Or you could have a head that has come untorqued, burning coolant. Or you could have a bad rod bearing causing low oil pressure. I would check the oil level and see if the oil is milky. I would probably go for a fresh oil change anyway.
Do you see excessive white smoke coming from tailpipe when you cold start the motor?
The early run 2000 models had bad oil pressure switches. If the light flickers only at very low rpm idling and goes out as soon as you reach 2000RPM, and the light is never steady on, it could be a bad oil pressure switch or very old oil.
You can check the fan by pulling the wires off the fan switch and temporarily shorting the wires together with the key turned on.

OK found the little bugger .... the fan is not coming on all the time, you can spin it a little and it will run, don't have to spin it every time but about every 5th time or so. I pulled the fan off, tight fit, there goes my sunday ride time, oh well, it was fun anyway ... now it seem that after pull the blade the fan motor is "maintainence free" OH NO !! Has anyone ever pried the cover off the motor, it seems to be sealed but held in place with some sort of silicon type black "glue", or am I wasteing the day here and just need to bite the bullet and order a new one ....

http://markynark.com/ModQuadDS650EP.html sells a replacement fan. Bombardier charges too much for theirs. I heard that Bombardier was replacing the original fan with one from another manufacturer.

Congratulations,
If it were me, I would take it to your local dealer for the "10" hour service. You probably got a good deal on the used quad and it would be worth investing another $150 in a good run through on the bike. Unless you have the service records, the original owner probably did not take it in for this service. Have the dealer change the oil (normally part of this service). Find a dealer that is open to letting you watch some of the work they perform. Your dealer should adjust your valves as part of the service. Your dealer should be able to tell you if the fan is not working. My quad gets hot on long slow trails (like around the yard.) I don't idle it very long so I cannot tell you about idle overheating.
Ask about:
Adjusting chain tension (This may be why your chain is hitting the roller.)
Changing the oil - including priming the oil (prior to turning over the engine.)
Lube all your Zirk fittings (I have noticed a few squeeks on mine.)
If you plan on working on your quad yourself over time I suggest picking up an impact driver (Kregan has them for less than $15.) You will find every screw/nut on this bike to be tight (not from excess torque but from a "Blue" weld lock material - cannot remember the name of the stuff - you can also get this at Kregan and good to use on this high vibration engine.
Let me know if you need some info out of the manual, I can scan it for you and e-mail to you.

Thanks for the info .... My goodness, this is alot like my sailing habit was ... it finally broke me .. Now I just stand in the shower and tear up twenty dollar bills when I get the urge to buy another boat ... Thanks for the lead on the cheaper replacement fan ... it list for a mear $99.95 ... now that is a deal ... hahaha .. I bet the dealer wants 250 or more, got to love those guys when they can look you right in the face and give you the total and never let on that they know what you are thinking about them ... They must go home and stand in front of the mirror to practice. Thanks so much for the help today ... I love the way this thing is put together. I will be on it again soon enough, will keep you posted.

A scan from the manual would be great. the part about oil changes and checking the level ... priming etc. A friend has a honde ex and it seems to be a little more then just pulling the dip stick. My addy is Rusty@Easterling.com thanks much
